How could this forum be complete without a place to show off our beautiful instruments?

Let us see those Smith basses!!

Mine is a 2001 BSR4EG fretless and can be found on Ken's BSR Elite G page. It's the quilted maple BSR4EG fretless right in the middle of that row.

Wow Bob!
I've only seen one KS bass down here... it was a 6 string and made my mouth water.
Mind you, I've just put strings on my '78 fretted jazz bass and it's really honking!

I was originally going to get a Jackson custom fretless bass but they "lost my order" after 5 months of a projected 9 went by, even though I had a printed copy of the order and a fax copy of the design. They refused to budge and said I would have to reorder and look at another 9 months for delivery so I told em to forget it (hind sight being 20/20 I'm very happy this happened). When I was in Guitar Center that day they had a used Smith 5 string (forget the exact model) there and I played it for about an hour. It was an incredible instrument. I still can't fathom what someone traded it in for. Anyway, I went home and did some research on Smith basses and the 2 days later was on a conference call with Guitar Center and Ken discussing the details of my custom bass order.

He projected 7 months if I recall and delivered it in 5. When I went to pick it up there were a lot of salivating people standing around admiring it when I walked in.

And Ken, I see you edited my post to add Smith to the title. I assumed people would know I meant show your Smith Bass. And how about showing us some of your personal favorite basses you have produced or currently still play?

Well, that's a tough one. I play every Bass that goes out and once in awhile, a Bass hits me like real personally. It could be the feel, the sound, the looks or all of it.

I changed your title so there would be zero confusion about what we wanna see up here.

On the GC thing, just a friendly note, as we no longer do business with GC. Anyone wishing to buy a Smith, contact us directly so we can either steer you to a Smith dealer in your normal direct shopping area (your town) or sell you directly which we often do now as we have cut many of our dead-beat dealers in place of servicing our customers better.

Beautiful bass you have there by the way...

Hey Bob, I have to wonder myself when I hear of people getting rid of their Smith ... especially someone like Andrew Gouche, who recently sold his (older body style) 6 string on - believe it or not - his MYSPACE site ! On top of that, he endorses Tobias basses, and has about 5 or 6 of them.
I think I'm gonna throw up ...
I thank Ken for actually selling these things after finishing laboring for six months - hell, I would just keep them all for myself ! Which is exactly what I will do with this one ... Shame on you Andrew.

I think the reason it looks different is since the wood is cut crossing the grain rather then along with it like on tobias basses and other lacewood tops ive seen...

By the way, do any of you guys have problem with heavy heads? I mean, my 92´ burner´s got a huge head and when it comes to play this bass standing up, OMG, the neck goes all the way down.
If this ever happened to you how did you manage to control it?

On the Basses with our original BT shape, most players rest their arm on the Body when playing.

Man, am I glad to see this!

Thanks for setting this kind of thing up, Mr. Smith.

I am a loyal Smith player. I've had MANY basses and yours are the ones I keep coming back to... I shall never stray from the fold again.

Here's my baby, It's a BSR-6 Elite G with a Morado top & back.

I'm not the original owener... I think I'm the 3rd. But in it's history, the finish is not perfect. I'm wondering if you do refinshes to give it back that "like new" appearance and feel?

Oh, and by the way...
I call dibs on the first
BSR7EG / MD7 or BB7FE25 that gets posed for sale on this (or any) website!!

Yes, we do all sorts of restorations on our Basses unless it's been run over by a truck and then burned at the stake. If a Smith Bass can be restored, we will take the job.

On the 7-string, we had 2 of them in stock for quite a while and then in one week out of the blue, we get two separate calls and see them both..
Go figure..

But I'm partial to darker tops and ever since ebay changed their policy to hide the names of bidders when the price exceeds a certain amount, I don't even participate.... too easy to get taken advantage of...ebay is for sellers... NOT buyers. Plus, at that price, I will save for a new one instead of a 2 year old one.

However, that IS a really nice looking one. I bet it plays like BUTTA!! I've been saving for 6 months, by the end of this year, I should be ready to place my order. Hopefully, there'll be a stoopid curly piece of cocobolo laying around!!

Mr. Smith,

I think that your instruments are awesome and I am glad that you offer the refurbishing services. I shipped my CR5GMW to you today. It is outstanding that in this day and age you can pick up the phone and speak to the craftsman himself about your instrument.

Thank you,

Here's a shot of my treasures, it took me a little while to collect them, but well worth the wait. I have a CR4MW 4 string, a
BT EG 5 string and my latest addition that's currently being repaired by Ken Smith a CR6 6 string all different woods from Tiger Maple to Walnut. They are all great basses and serve me well. I currently play for The MT. Carmel Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir, The Associated Praise Team and a youth group by the name of Unified Souls.

Well, I think that is something we can do. You also must understand how we slot the fingerboards which is the same for fretted or lined fretless. The accuracy must be 100% with no guess work in the spacing. This is our slotting machine here that we made years ago.

http://www.kensmithbasses.com/ft/shopsection/images/cut_fbd.jpghttp://www.kensmithbasses.com/ft/shopsection/gangsaw.html

I guess we could modify the Jig to cut only the sides like your photo suggests.

Ken Smith
02-15-2007, 10:35 PM
YES!!! Now the question is, what's the darkest wood available for the wings. Ebony? Would that sound like dog meat?

The wood used would depend on the model as far as we are concerned. Our Ebony has some stripes but not always visible. This is a Top Wood and not a solid wing material. Ebony is best finished in Lacquer as the Oil does not look as good being that Ebony is an oily wood in itself. Walnut is another choice and the shade of darkness varies but never as dark as Ebony. Some of our Imbuia is dark as well as Cocobolo. With Cocobolo, we get into the Finish process again. Woods like Ebony and Cocobolo are standard on the Elite models but available up-charged on lower cost models with the Oil/Varnish finish.

By the way what kind of sound does dog meat have? Never made a bass with it so I am asking..

Ken Smith
02-17-2007, 02:56 AM
Sounds like ebony top wood in lacquer is the ticket. In the BSR5EG models, is an ebony veneer on the headstock an option?

Most Basses especially the Elites have a matching headcap, bookmatched. In Ebony, you can;t see the match so well but it's there.

My first post, so hello all!

At the moment I have just one Smith, a BMT Elite G from 1994. It is, hands down, the best bass I have ever owned (and I've owned a lot).

I bought it a few years back, and it was originally fretless and had seen some wear. The guy I bought it from said it had been owned by Reba McIntire's bassist, but I can't confirm if that is true or not.

Anyway, I returned it to Ken to be refinished and have the sp switches fitted. It was given a general overhaul and a few other bits tidied up.

Now it plays like a dream and has the most amazing tone. The fingerboard is one thick slab of ebony that gives the bass massive sustain and presence in the mix. I love it!

Here it is hanging out with my Epi rig...

Well, if you ever make it over there, they've got on display the giant 3 string double bass which was owned by Dragonetti and made by Gasparo da Salo. Allegedly it was used for performances of Handel's Water Music - its a complete monster. I can't begin to imagine what a performance on one of those must have been like.

Yes I have heard that before since about 40 years ago when I bought the Elgar books where the museum is mentioned along with one of Dragonetti's Basses. Can we expect a Smith double bass any time in the future? :)

There have been Basses made in the UK 19th century by a Smith as there are a few listed that were violin makers BUT, as far as me goes, Nope!

I like my old Basses mainly as my personal preference. If I want a newer Bass, there are some great makers out there already doing it like Arnold Schnitzer and Jeff Bollbach which did make a beautiful Lion's head Bass (http://www.kensmithbasses.com/DoubleBasses/Bollbach/Bollbach.htm) which by chance, I now own. ;)

Does your '05 BSR6P have the 18 volt system or the 9 volt?
Either way the wood is beautiful, was the bass created especialy for you by Ken, or did you aquire it else where?

The BSR6P has the 18 volt preamp. I bought the bass two years ago from Bass Emporium in Austin TX while traveling down there on business. I stopped in to take a look at what they had, and ended up buying it on the spot. Best playing bass I own (as well as the BT6).

Hello Eranio, I have a question, I noticed that you have your low "B" string strung in the Fodera head shot photo were normally the "A" string would be, is there any particular reason why

Tim Bishop
03-10-2007, 08:40 AM
My unsolicited response would be: I suspect this is due to the design of the peg-head. There really is no other place for the B string to be strung given the line from the Nut to the respective Tuning Peg. Odd, but I guess one thing it allows for is B string extension and ease of wind to the tuning peg.

I hope all of my fellow "Smith" Bass players out here have done what I have in respect to obtaining insurance on your axes and rigs. Personally I have to much $$ invested in my gear not to. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Tim Bishop
03-10-2007, 12:06 PM
Couldn't agree with you more Albert!

My insurance policy is this; in this order:

1. My insurance company has me covered.
2. I live in a gated community and have a home that is fully Alarmed (w/motion detectors) and monitored.
3. I have 2 German Sheperds and a BC/Arctic/Eastern Timber Wolf on constant patrol in and outside my home.
4. Where coverages 1, 2, and 3 fail, I am always home and legally armed.

Don't get me wrong, I see it as just stuff, but barring the unexpected I feel fairly well protected. :D

I have my basses and rig insured through Clarion they specialize in insuring instruments, I got the inside scoop on them a Bass Day at the Millennium Hotel last year in NY. They are also being advertised on Bass player.com
The premiums are very reasonable.

Hey, guys! In anticipation of receiving my Smith, I went ahead and spoke to my friendly State Farm Agent. We've been with her for years (Homeowners, Auto, some life, a Personal Articles policy or two).

I told Teresa what I was receiving, and the value of it. She instructed me to bring the Smith in for a photo session, along with the receipt. She'll insure it under a separate "Personal Articles" policy for a nominal annual premium. If ANYTHING happens to it (theft, fire, etc.) it's then replaced at FULL value, no deductable!

Like a good neighbor...well, you know the rest!

Ronson that's great but do some shopping around before signing on the dotted line, for instance will they give you a loaner if you have to send your axe back to Ken for a set-up? if the item is anywhere else other than your home is it covered? Clarion Instrument Insurance does all of this and a lot more, so research before you decide on going with your good neighbor. It might save you from being axe-less in the time of need.

Owwww! Watch out, Spidey!

Al, you've given me some good points to check! I KNOW our State Farm girl doesn't have any Smiths laying around for loaners (good point!), but I know that if the axe is ANYWHERE on this planet, it is covered for theft, fire, water damage, mysterious disappearance (her wording).

At any rate, Clarion Instrument Insurance sounds well worth checking out.

Thanks for lookin' out! :)

Hello to you all!
Maybe it's off topic, but has anyone tried a Smith J-series bass? What were your impressions?
I haven't played or touched or seen (except for pix on the web) a Ken Smith so far but I would like to order one. I was thinking of a J or J-MW. Do you by chance know any websites where I could listen to a J sample? Unfortunately walking in to a musical instrument store and try one is not an option for me :-(

Mendell Beckford

I've owned a j mw for a year now and it's the best of both worlds.I almost had smith soapbars installed when i bought it but a guitar player(who also plays bass)gave me some insight. With just a slight tweak from the eq,i can go from the authentic" Smith" sound to early fender jazz,so i am very happy i didn't touch it

I am happy to hear that. I know that authentic Smith sound, but I've never tried what it feels like. I am much more familiar with J type basses. So does it also produce that bright HiFi voice as well? What wood is your J-MW made of? Originally I was planning to choose an ash only body, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe walnut-maple...

Ebony is a VERY heavy wood (5.5 Lbs. per Bd. Ft.) but oh so worth it! The total weight of the bass probably weighs somewhere in the vicinity of 12 Lbs. Like Ebony, Cocobolo is another VERY heavy wood but my favorite tone wood of all. ;)

One more (a BSR5EG fretless similar to the Tiger Maple 5EG above) is on the way. And I'm looking forward to get a Black Tiger Elite in the future.

The first one is one of the 4 Collector's Classics and is shown on Ken's webpage here: http://www.kensmithbasses.com/models/neckthru/elite/bsr5eg5Aflamedwalnut.html

Best regards from Germany.

Those axes are simply perfect, an excellent collection of Smith basses, I noticed though no 4 string. I suspect that your taste is more so for 5,6, 7 string playing. ;)

Folks,

I received my first Ken Smith Bass Tuesday morning! I was so excited, I took a photo of the UPS guy bringing the box to my door! :D

It's a BSR5MW with Cocobolo front & back, and Tiger Maple core. I got the parallel switches as well. It's a beautiful thing! I played it at church for the first time tonight (Praise Team rehearsal), and the response from the other musicians was classic!

I've got some "HTTP 500 Server Error" that pops up everytime I try and upload photos I've taken of it, so I'll try and figure that out soon so I can show it here, and upgrade my avatar.

Ken, thank you for such a fine instrument. Of all the basses I've played and handled, this is the most beautiful I've ever held. I plan on getting another Smith or two ASAP to add to my collection, but I'm sure that this first one will be with me until I leave this earth. It's special to me.

Also, thanks to Don! And thanks for the "special attention" you paid to a first time customer. I'm enjoying everything!

1995 CR6GF Flame Maple (Lined Fretless)
1997 BSR6G Tiger Maple
Though I'm very happy with this lineup I may add a Walnut Smith 6
someday for variety.

"Besides the craftsmanship and flawless execution of the design, I've always been drawn to the "wood pile". The significance of aged seasoned woods in creating instruments that will last a lifetime is overlooked by too many makers in my opinion. I like necks that require little to no adjustment season to season and that remain true as a straight rule. The Smith's deliver!"

There's my endorsement........unpaid endorsement I should add.

Thank you. Your CR-6 in Ebony is amazing looking.

I can't say that I do(own a WBT 5 Elite). I've only owned 6's. Actually never played a 5'er.
Went from 4 to 6 back in 1994 and stayed there. Not opposed to 5's, but
for me 6's feel like home.

I totally agree, and that's the reason I've listed my 4 string for sale, its to nice of an instrument to just be sitting around. I am so comfortable playing 5, and 6 string until I very rarely pick up my 4.

Absolutely...I'd still like a 4 string Jazz bass around for when I need "that" sound but my Smith ERB's cover everything else I need.

This is pretty much my approach as well. The Smiths are first call and whatever tone they can't deliver gets covered by the 4 strings (Alembic Series 1, Celinder Update 4 or '78 Musicman Stingray). Can't think of a more versatile set up.

They sure do, Jason, but only for the neck-thru models. I believe the catalyzed lacquer finish is reserved for the neck-thru's as well, making them (as they should be) an even more exclusive acquisition indeed!

However, until I get my first neck-thru ((elite Tiger in my sights next), my Lola (that's my new bass) is officially the best sounding, best built thing since Oreo cookies.

Ahh, but my Smith fretless is my 4 string. I have a Brice 5 fretless and a Dean Edge 5 I play as well, but I keep coming back to my Smith. I'll likely play it until I get my next Smith, which will be a 5. Then depending on the Smith 5, I may not have reason to play my 4 anymore. If that day comes it will be put in a Plexiglas case and hung on my living room wall as art. I'm just too attached to sell it.

My sentiments concerning the 5-string that my new Smith replaced, Bob!

It's an Ibanez 5 Paduk/Bubinga thing. It's the only thing I could afford 14 years ago ($700.00), and it's treated me very well. Not long after getting it, I replaced the J-style stock pickups with Seymour Duncans, then EMG's, and finally, I found part of the answer in the Bartolini's.

I've already had two offers to buy old Betsy (the Ibanez). But, like you, I'll probably just hang it up somewhere, or give it to my grandson when he gets old enough to be interested in the Bass. It got me through a long period of time in admirable fashion.

However, nothing plays or sounds like a Ken Smith. Nothing.

Well, my 1st bass was a cheap piece of junk Lotus. That bass never gets played. It currently sits in it's case in a closet, but it will be in my casket with me when I die.

Well, if you removed the baffling and speakers you could probably fit me inside the 810 cab.. But no, I'm being put into a mausoleum slot that is just large enough for my wife and I to be together. The Lotus can lay on me in the casket.. No need for the rig as I won't be playing the Lotus anymore at that point, besides, it might wake the dead..

This is a simple Tiger Maple core and back with a Walnut top, and Morado fingerboard.

I actually don't remember exactly what year it was made, but if I recall correctly it was made in 2001 (the documents are stored in a quite hard to reach place, sorry..)

I play mainly Rock and Alternative music, but a lot of Pop, Funk, R&B, Reggae, Dub and electronic music as well. This bass is so versatile, I play all these styles with it, and it never lets me down:cool:

Hello,

i don't have any spectacular shots of my bass yet, but here is one from the Copa Cabana, NY.

I cannot stress enough how much this bass handles business. Killer neck, light weight, comfy standing (crucial for me), and musical, superb tones all across the neck... It can really growl, or be nice and soft and musical... yum!

I've put my really worn BSR5EG in the service to replace the fretted board with a ebony fretless one, of course with a refinish. The deep "fire" of the original finish hasn't been completely reached, but overall it was a good refinish job.

The tone is quite similar to the Zon fretless sound and sings or growls - just as you treat it.

I had the late Gary Emmons of Crackerbox Music install a third straplock round about where the old gibson strap buttons went on the EB1 (sg model). I then went to a two strap system which was kinda like a harness that keeps my bass in an upright position so I could concentrate on playing and not holding the neck up all the time- I'm pretty small with small hands and I dont have enough energy for all that.

It will look like crap because of the exposure. I took that shot in the dark to test out the ISO and aperture settings on my camera. It came out real yellow-red looking so I put it through a Sepia filter to tone it down a touch.

Just to let you know the wall in the background is supposed to be white.

Photoshop is a wonderful thing.:)

Well, since you asked.

I've had it for about a year now but it's from mid 2005. My good friend Dan had one made for him in 2004 I think. He had it for a year but he left it at his Church and it was stolen from the store room along with mid 1960's Strat. I started working at his old Job when he quit and I ordered him the new one when the insurance money came through. He had a kid, bought a house, and got married in the time that it took the bass to get there and canceled the order from us so he could have the money to buy stuff for his family.

So about two years goes by and I have some money saved from gigs and I start thinking about a new bass. I remember the first time a came to Ken's webpage, when I was about 16, thinking "man I can't wait to get one of those". So I call Ken. I really like Koa but with its prices the way they are and how hard it is to get a good piece we started talking about a Black Tiger. It was sort of a compromise but a really good one and I was happy. The way that the Chain that I worked for works is that it has central buying so I had to call my Head Office to get a price and okay it with them. I called and they said, "We've got a Koa BSR4GN here if you want it". It was the replacement Bass for Dan!!! It was sitting a warehouse for over a year hanging out with a bunch of boxes. I took it and got a real good price on it and that's how I got my bass.

Hi all,

I am new to the forum, so forgive my screen name. It is in process to be changed, per forum protocol. My real name is Terry.

My Smith is a 92 CR5. I have had it for 6 or so years. White oak over walnut core. I haven't seen one in oak before, from any builder. Not an especially flamboyant wood, but very cool if you are into understated wood.

I have a question for Ken on the bass. As you can see, under the serial number is stamped "Chucky". The seller told me he bought it at a show, and it was built *for* Chuck Rainy. Any truth to that, or shall I dash my hopes right now?

Whatever the history, its a great sounding and fun bass to play.

Terry

Yes, this was made for Chuck Rainey. Several years ago when Chuck was on tour in Europe, his ex-wife (then wife) took all his Bass he left at home and sold them as she needed some cash/money while he was away. I don't know all the details but I got this partial story directly from Chuck. He knew some of those that bought his basses 'legally' so when he needed them, he would borrow them back for recordings and such.

I bought some quartered white Oak back in 1987 to try for some basses and made only a few with it. This was the last of the 2 or 3 I made. It was also a wide spacing I think. When the saddles at the bridge have a small space between them, it's the 19mm. When they touch, it's the 18mm. The saddles are all the same size so that's how I can tell.

'Chucky' is his nick name as he told me.

This is a CR5G model, #080 in sequence and QO is the wood, quartered Oak and 92 is the year 1992. This Bass was completed for Chuck Rainey on 11/25/1992. The Bass does not have the 'G' for graphite in the # as back then, we made them all with Graphite anyway so it wasn't necessary. Now we make both the CR5 without graphite and the CR5G with the Graphite so the #s are marked accordingly.

What you have here is a piece of Ken Smith history.

Chuck was also my favorite player years before we ever met and I worked hard to imitate his style. One time while making a record for a NY singer Mercedes Hall (mother of the famous actor Anthony Michael Hall. I remember Michael when he was just a child. One new years gig, he sat in on bongos. He was so cute..lol.. A real energetic kid back then), I was really into Chuck's type of sound and approach. That night I ran into one of the backup singers that was overdubbing on the track, a disco version of Elvis's "Hurt" (this was 1975 by the way). The singer tells me that they got so into the bass line that they lost their place and had to start over again. They assumed it was Chuck Rainey on the track but they were told it was me, Ken Smith on it.. lol.. but true story. One more was back in 1982, my first meeting of Chuck after only talking on the phone with him once before about a bass. It was at the NAMM show in Atlanta and I was in my booth playing shortly before the show opened that day. Well, Chuck walks by right in the middle of my lick stealing warm up and he shouts out from an isle away "Hey, watch that s**t" (or was it 'stuff', can't recall).. lol

I was a working Pro in the NY studios Back then and Chuck I think was in LA. Some of the producers I worked for used to call him when he was in town so I guess he was just being protective. By the way, he said it with a smile on his face. We are still friends regardless of business or music. I still think his bass lines are the best ever. Chuck is also a great guy to hang with as we have had many dinners and times together.

So, now you have it. Chuck is my all time favorite Electric Bass player. Not Stanley, Jaco, Victor or any of the other acrobats. For music, my money is on Chucky!

Ken,

What a great story. Thanks for sharing it. Its nice to know that I have an instrument connected to such a colorful history. I guess its fair for me to relate how I acquired the bass.

I have been a guitar player for 30+ years, and never played bass until 2000, when I began putting together my studio. At the time, I was recording keyboard bass, but was not very happy with the sound or the process. I started hunting around for an electric bass.

A good friend, who is also a jazz bass player, has played the same Smith since the late 80s. He obviously recommended them highly. I tried a few in my travels and began to lock in on finding one. I had more or less settled on a new BSR5 in maple from the Bass Palace in Scranton PA.

Being that I am in Ottawa, and unable to try that particular bass without buying first, I asked the guy, if money was no object (up to a point), what is the best sounding bass he has in his shop. He told me this CR5, which he had recently bought at a show, likely related to the "sale" by his wife. Frankly, it was premium priced at the time, but the possible connection to Chuck Rainy intrigued me. So I bought it.

I have used it for recording since, and recently began playing it regularly in my weekly "gig" at church -- my first bass gig. Like I said above, I totally enjoy this bass. Though I still have an eye out for a nice BSR5 in tiger maple.

Thanx Tim :)

For practice i use a Hartke HA5000 amp with a Hartke 115TP cabinet (on small room) or Hartke 215XL cabinet (on a large room).

For live (on stage) i use an aguilar DB680 preamp, aguilar DB 728 amplifier with two aguilar GS 410 cabs

and also (sometimes) i use a Line6 Bass Pod preamp and always a Xotic Bass RC Booster (on stage) :)
