Hi there,

I have had these two basses for some time but have never known their origins. Anyone with any idea how old these basses are? The lighter shade bass is now undergoing reconstruction. One of the supporting backribs was rattling and my luthier and i had to open it up. We found a "can of worms" and therefore fixing everything along the way. The darker bass i had for 12 years and has matured nicely with me. It's my main gigging bass.

First one could be Czech maybe. It's old but what is that Piece of wood down in the center of the Back?

The Second looks Czech as well.

Both Basses are Germanic in style made anywhere from Germany to Russia. Not France, England, Italy, or Spain. Someplace Germany of east of it.

Ages, 50-100 years or so is my estimate.

The Pics are more artistic styled than informative for me for someone looking to ID them. Look at my DB pages. Don't make the wood dark or unclear and show EVERY detail and part of the Bass. More clues are needed so 10-20 pics minimum and nothing at an angle. Makes me me dizzy looking at them.

The wood down the middle of the first bass was a coverup for some serious cracks and repaired with self tapping screws (i can't believe it myself!). It has since been removed and the cracks repaired and patched up from the inside. We're now repairing the endpin block area and some cracks along the ribs, then the top goes on it again.

The 2nd bass has a "Made in Germany" label. Top carved and ply back and sides. I never really worry about knocks as it has been really tough thru the years. A real gigging hybrid bass and a nice sounding one. I'm lucky :)

I'll try and get more pics for bass ID purpose when i have more time.
Thanks for the reply Ken.
