None yet. Incidently, the Greek word for pope is πάπας.

how about this Pope?

Good try Craig, but I don't think that Mike has ever been elected by a Papal Conclave. Anyway, if Mike were a real pope, he could become known as
Pope Pope and that could look like a mistake on official Vatican documents. It might be prudent not to push this "could Mike be the first bass playing pope" line.

Im starting to suspect that there aren't any. That would make this thread a little pointless. I know, we'll include bass players who have also been a cardinal!

Kevin, while I am naturally very grateful for the effort that Craig and yourself have invested in the interest of saving the good name of this thread, if Pope Benedict did actually play a Smith bass (or any brand of bass, for that matter) he'd probably adopt the title
Pope Benedict The Bassist.
The three string chord that he has just strummed with his thumb is Amaj7b5(no 3rd). He's playing a tritone in that chord
(A - D# (enharmonically)); an interval that the early Church seriously disliked enough to refer to as 'the devil in music'. Has the church done an about turn? Has Heavy Metal sold out and will Heavy Metal songs now contain words such as 'love' and 'forgiveness'?

Silly, if he played a B.C. Rich then he might be named Pope Benedict The Bassist. If he plays a Smith he would just be call Pope or the Pope Formerly Know as Pope. Or magnificent.

I know it looks like an Amaj7b5, but as we all know Pope Benedict plays Alto. So on top of his poor right hand technique (mostly due to his age) and being played Alto strung, that would actually be a Dsus2 chord which is quite common in Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina music. While I am sure the Pope gets down to Judas Priest on occasion, I cannot for see Rob Halford singing about the loaves and fishes any time in the foreseeable future.

Alto bass? What's that? Even trumpet players don't get into that nonsense! Anyway, Dsus2 is a sissies' chord - if a guy gets to be pope, no matter how sloppy his fingering is (and I agree that it is), he's going to want to make a strong musical statement. After all, a large portion of the world hangs onto his every word. Sorry Kevin, if I come across all 'high and mighty', but a guy of Bene's age who is enjoying his time in the limelight isn't going to tolerate a chord with no 7th. That'd be far too esoteric for him! No Kevin. Organised religion follows a well trodden road. I think I'm qualified to pull you up on this one. What is my qualification, I hear you ask? Well, I do run a blog that has just about been able to prove that the universe is finite - what have you done? Anyway, I suspect that the 'popegate photo' was a setup. It's more likely that he would play double bass.

Okay, I think we should include bass players who have stepped inside a church. I'm going to define a church as a large room with seats and some guy standing up front talking about fairly significant issues. Maybe there'll also be some concept of a smarter person who is available to give guidance.
This is as far as I'm prepared to go.

Richard,
Your definition of a church now includes AMWAY meetings and political rallys as well.
Has Obama ever sold soap or held a BSR and made a flat 5 chord?
If not, how can he qualify as a Mesiah?

Craig, you make a very good point. Yes, Amway is the problem because each bass player would have to be supplying strings to another four bass players and so on; until just about everone was sitting around trying to put on bass strings. Obama playing b5 chords? From what I've heard about your new president, he'd probably have no problems improvising diminished scale notes over a minor II - V7 progression or playing a diminished whole tone lick over a 7#5 chord - I think this boy has got the goods!
In the interest of keeping this thread on track though, I'm going to do a bit of redefining:
Bass players who have also been a pope*

*This is widened to include Roman Catholic Cardinals, Medicine Show Preachers, anyone who has seen the film 'The Bible' starring Charlton Heston in a cinema, any American President and people who like to meditate. It excludes anyone involved in a pyrimad selling scheme and it also excludes John Key.

Hey, Craig, do you know who John Key is?

do you know who John Key is?

John Key was a famous jazz-bassist in texas is the 1950s-1960s. he worked with woody herman and al cohn.
he always played red-o-rays on his juzek.
he later moved to mexico, where everybody called him Don Key, but he didnĀ“t like that.

1972 he was elected as catholic cardinal in puerto rico

Hey, Craig, do you know who John Key is?

John Key is the Prime Minister of New Zealand.....

And if he doesn't play a Smith bass, he's a punk and shouldn't be allowed
to lead any nation, church, or pyramid marketing organization!!!!!!

*Especially a nation so close to where they grow kangaroos*

What do I win Monte?

I want what's behind door #3.....

I'm happy with the idea of John Key not leading a nation. However, we New Zealanders don't like to associated too closely with Australians. It's only seeing that Anselm has a new picture of himself on his post that allows me to stay calm!
I think I'll declare Anselm Hauke pope of Wainuiomata.

Yep. Sounds like any protestant service I've ever attended! :p Fun, entertainment, party like atmosphere. Kinda like eating at the food court in the mall.
