first i thought it was a mistaking with pallotta and pallotton too, but it seems to be really "Peto Pallatton" (sounds a little hungarian to me...)

Pallotta is from Perugia and 1790 is near the start of his making era. All of the Pallotta's I have seen in person and in picture have Violin corners.

Here are two of them (http://www.krattenmacher.com/publications/p_pallotta.html);

On Jeff's copy, he will have to say which bass is was he used as he has seen a few himself. Here is Jeff's copy (http://www.kensmithbasses.com/doublebasses/Bollbach/Bollbach.htm);

http://www.kensmithbasses.com/doublebasses/Bollbach/images/full_FR.jpghttp://www.kensmithbasses.com/doublebasses/Bollbach/images/full_bk.jpghttp://www.kensmithbasses.com/doublebasses/Bollbach/images/scr_FR.jpg/img%5D%5Bimg%5Dhttp://www.kensmithbasses.com/doublebasses/Bollbach/images/scr_bk.jpg

I guess it is easy to tell a fake when the Bass itself is nothing like what they are trying to claim and also if they can't even spell the name. Using a Hungarian translation of the Italian/Latin name is also a dead giveaway.. lol

ken, thanks for the quick reply with the many pics.
well, they look not like the "Pallatton" :)

maybe it comes from the "Balaton".... http://maps.google.de/maps?hl=de&tab=wl
sorry, the link does not work, you can type "Balaton" in the search window.

I worked on a Pietro Pallota many years ago. Violin corners, like most Italian basses, very pretty and it sang! I think it was c. 1790?
