Uriel Carney - Drums

Uriel Carney was born and raised in Kentucky. “ Rhythm Child” as he is fondly called has been playing jazz and gospel drums since his childhood. Starting at the age of 10, his ideal drums were pots, pans and the arm of his grandparents’ love seat. During his first years in school he was forced to play the clarinet while being told by his band teacher that he was too small to be a drummer.

Being determined, Uriel taught himself to play drums. He attended church and loved to listen to gospel music. Before long, he started playing drums at his church. While attending high school, Uriel went from a freshman 3rd string bass to 1st string section leader snare by sophomore year. Uriel became the first percussionist at Butler Traditional High to bring a 5-piece drum set to the football games, basketball games, and competition music criteria. His learning to read music scores and charts was just an additive that pushed his ambition.
In 1990, Uriel was selected as the lead drummer in the national play “Mama I Want To Sing”. While in high school, Uriel received many awards including Most Talented in Class of 1993, MVP 1992, MVP 1993, Most Distinguished Award from Kentucky State University, where he graduated with music honors. While attending Jefferson Community College, he began attending drum clinics and opening his music horizons to different styles of music such as rhythm & blues, fusion, Latin American, rock, country and studio drumming. His influences were Dennis Chambers, Dave Weckl, Billy Cobham, Horacio Hernadez, Zoro and many more.

In 1995, Uriel began teaching drum techniques to young individuals. At his home church it is here that he earned the name “Rhythm Child” due to his passion for music. Over the course of his music career, he has been honored to sit in as guest drummer for artists and venues such as Kirk Franklin, Tanita Gaines, Ben Tankard, Donnie McClurkin, Playa, Goodfella, Def Comedy Poetry, Warner Bros.’ live comedy show, Spike Davis’s comedy events and gospel music workshops.
While playing the club scene, Uriel “Rhythm Child” has performed live and on recordings with Paul Bennett and the Second Chance band, BG, Nappy Roots, Kirk Wahlum, Klientel, Adrianne Archie, the battle of the bands 2005, Big Diggity, Code Red, Latin American artist Gracelia, BDP Productions, Buckwheat Jones, Skysirewest Soundchaser, Sleepy Stone and other artists.

Besides his busy playing career, he is an instructor at the River City Drum Corp and is very involved with teaching the aspect of rhythm and the music business, conducting seminars and classes in different cities throughout the United States. He says, “It is my goal to inspire people young and old, contributing a positive action towards spiritual growth and happiness.”
