Thanks! I also think it came out pretty nice but it's pure luck, I wasn't thinking about it. On the other hand, you really need to make a big mistake for a bass like this to look bad ;) EDIT - The back is beautiful too... last shot from the same session: http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Zr1xVqvwb2U/TM...0/DSC_4135.JPG |

The Smith is part of the Family
My smith is part of my family. If my house were burning, besides my family, there are two things I'd run back in for: My Smith Bass for obvious reasons and my laptop, way to much info on it.
Here are a few family pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...6_465843_n.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1..._6930837_n.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1..._7552387_n.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1..._6896946_n.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1..._3294320_n.jpg This last pic doesn't quite show how great the exhibition grade quilted maple top pops. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1..._3730126_n.jpg |

My 5-string - CR5G
I have a CR5G (89897 S) that I purchased from Huber/Breese in '98. I remember buying this and having a MTD bass shipped on inspection at the same time. Though the body style for the MTD was more similar to what I was used to with my Charvel, the tones of the Smith won out hands down. I'm having trouble uploading the image, so I'll do that later.
I am curious as to what the woods are in it, and what style is most similar to today's models? Frederick |
Need help?

Cr5g (89897 s) ..
The 'S' in the end is for Shedua so that is the Top. I can't see what the side laminations look like in that pic but if 5pc, the thin light wood would be Maple laminate or veneer as we used then. The Core looks dark but so does the picture. I would guess that the core is Mahogany, African species.
The '97' in the end is the year made. There should be a completion date on the label inside the back plate. We made several body wing sets back then used on Bolt-on's and Neck thrus in 4, 5 and 6 string model basses. The theme was basically 'The African model' using all african woods for the Top, back, core and most of the feature woods bordering the wings and center, mainly in contrasting colors using Bubinga, Shedua and Zebrawood. That's what comes to mind. I have bought a small load of African Mahogany to try out as an alternative to the traditional tropical mahogany. The load yielded about 40-50 core sets so I just made these up with African Top woods and dubbed it 'African model' body wings. |

I finally got my dream bass, the old mighty BMT6. I had the privilege to play it today at my church and I was blown away. Amazing instrument, truly a work of art and craftsmanship.

Hi all,
I have actually had some dummass say to me; "hey dude, nice Carvin" at which time I told him that he was mistaken. I informed him that the bass was really a "Sears", couldn't he plainly see the big "S"? Gotta love a wiseass!! Later, Kirk |

Wow, a MD7 and BSR6EG. Now,, that's a totally heaven pair of Smith's. What year are they respectively?
|
Hey Roy
The Cocobolo/Walnut MD7 is a 2001, 9 volt pre-amp and Ebony/Tiger Maple is 2011, 18 volt pre-amp that I just received. Two very different instruments for tone, there is nothing similar in the way that they sound. The Ebony to my ear is really brilliant across the tonal spectrum with lots of punch. The Cocobolo is very smooth and deep on the low end with crystal like highs, mids are very complex which I roll off quite a bit. The Maple/Mahogany that I just sold had a very classic Smith sound that was warm and punchy with strong mids that Smiths are known for and sat well within the mix when playing live. I am probably giving you more information than you need but I really enjoy these instruments and thought this might be info that you are others could use if looking at something similar in a Smith bass. Rory |

Hey Hiroshi!
Beautiful basses. Anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first Smith bass. The woodworking is so impressive. |
Thank you.Steven.
It is arrival pleasure of the first base. Woodwork is very wonderful and the accuracy of a neck is also the highest. Although Japan is humid, for the moment, it has not curved. Please enjoy Ken Smith LIFE. |
Thank you. Someday I hope to visit. My sister in law is
from Yokohama originally. My brother has been there and has shown pictures. Someday. Take care and please post up again. Steve |
Looks very much like mine!

Series/Parallel Switches......
Quote:
Hi Rory! I was watching your Smiths, they are really beautiful basses, but seeing the setup of your series/parallel switches I noticed you use the neck pickup in series (switch up) and the bridge pickup in parallel (switch down), and see that configuration in both of your basses; so my question is, why you like this setup? I ask because I have had this doubt for some time and also because I have noticed that other Smith players use that configuration too. Thanks for sharing! :) |
