The pics are interesting. First one is the lower bout: no jack plug hole ever drilled as far as I can tell.

http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/...outresized.jpg

Next is the control cavity. Yes, jack plug goes through the rout usually designated for tone pot. Looks like pretty good work to me! And if anyone would like to chime in, I'd like to know whether this is the old 9v BT circuit, or if it's the BMT minus the mid.

http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/...l--resized.jpg

And finally, here's the maker's mark.

http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/...r--resized.jpg

So there you have it. I'd be interested to hear anything that Ken might recollect or have to say about the bass or the story that came with it. And I appreciate your eyes, Tim: I haven't spent enough time with enough different KS basses to be able to quickly discern something as noticeable as a jack plug where a tone pot should be!

Well, looks like this bass was ordered this way. Nice bass, very clean. I have a '92 BT5G Zebra. Looks similar to this one, except a neck-thru with same woods, however, 3 band pre. I LOVE it!

Tim Bishop 11-29-2012 12:00 AM

BTW- Looks like the original 2-band BT pre to me.

Chris Fox 11-29-2012 12:23 AM

Ken, Tim--wow. Thanks so much for the backstory and assessment. While conducting the transaction with Scott, he said repeatedly this was a special bass, and he couldn't have been more right. So glad it's mine.

Tim Bishop 11-29-2012 12:31 AM

Yep...

Tim/Chris, this was the 9v BT/BMT 4 or 5 knob circuit that came out in late 1992.

1993 Burner Deluxe 5

I wanted a production-level J-bass-ish 5 string, and after realizing how much I love my CR-5, I thought, well, duh. So I sold my EBMM Sterling 5, scoured the internet, and found this in Los Angeles. A bit of text messaging, Paypal, and Fedex, and here she is.

http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/...e/IMG_0741.jpg

So now I have low and medium tiers covered. Next up: a high-end, neck-through. That one'll take a bit more time and marital finessing. But for now, I'm there.

Im so jealous. But I have a Black Tiger, and I didn't feel the need to have two basses that produce the same tone.

Let us see those Smith basses!!

Mine is a 2001 BSR4EG fretless and can be found on Ken's BSR Elite G page. It's the quilted maple BSR4EG fretless right in the middle of that row.

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum, just though I'd show off my bass. It's a BSR5PE in Quilted Maple, Mahogany Core.

my new BSR5EG. maple/maple with walnut laminates. This one may be my favorite.

This one is different because it has the 3-way switches Series/Single Coil/Parallel. Just gives me more options for sounds.

I just picked up my new BSR7EG from Ken a couple of weeks ago......I absolutely love it! It is Western Maple Core and Tiger Maple top and back. It joins my 7 year old 6 String 'Black Tiger' in the set up! I'll post more pictures of the Black Tiger shortly! :D

New member here. Found this beauty literally abandoned in a long time closed to public second hand musicstore. Burner Custom Red. Hope you enjoy!
Amazing how the red turns into orange against the light... sexiness...

What a beautyfull bass! That's the one I want!

Frank Graveyard 12-24-2014 04:49 PM

Perhaps you could tell me what the neck feels like. How would you describe the neckprofile at the first fretpositions? Thanks.

Gears..

FYI, those are NOT the Gears we/I put on those basses. Those are Shaller and they are also Upside Down. The screw hole goes on the bottom, not th top.

We were using Gears made by Gotoh for several years before I produced this model.

if you look at the end of the fingerboard and on the label, you will see the serial number. It will be 2xx, made in 1985-87 or so. The date is on the label as well.

Wait, let me think.... Ok, your serial number is ... 268 and made in 1987. The date is in the back plate. I don't have date records from that far back.

Also, you need TCRM strings to sound its best. Be good to your bass! :)

Franck Callebert 03-23-2015 04:25 AM

hi Ken, thank you for the informations !
This bass is unchanged till it has been purchased ... guess it was an old stock of machine head when you built this wonderfull BT4 :) (date 9/19/86)

Here the serial number : 86 268 at the end of the fingerboard

Ebay purchase--1995 5G in lacewood and mahogany

Saw this on Ebay for $1700 BIN, got a good credit offer, and pulled the trigger. It very much needs a setup and came from a smoker. None of that matters: it's incredible. Very light, and that neck heel--oh my God. I've really liked my 1995 CR-5, but this is a whole lot more bass. Any tips on getting rid of cigarette odor?

This is my Ken Smith, I have other basses as Sadowsky, Fodera, Fender, Music Man, and are very good instruments, but the "Smith" has a plus !!! I can not explain exactly what I mean, but this low is unique, has a different mechanical, it is more enjoyable to play, I can make things easier with him than with the other basses, and the timbre is the highlight ... wonderful, not lump together with kick drums, very definite notes, just fantastic !!!! Congratulations mister Ken, you reinvented the way to build an electric bass !!! Thank you for being born.
