Hi Tim, and everyody else off course!

As promissed a picture of the BSR 5EG FX I've traded for my Alembic
and my other BSR 5EG.
Without any doubt the best basses I've ever played.
That means the sound as well as playability and looks!
Really amazing! Keep up the good work Ken!
And thanks Rainer for introducing me to Smith Basses!

Greetz,
Dirk

I'm getting the same results as before when I click on the thumbnails in your original post (post no. 376). However, your links you provided in your follow-up reply are working fine.

So, Ken, are you clicking on the Thumbnails he provided in post no. 376? And if so, you are able to see the enlarged view?

Tim Bishop 11-07-2009 11:46 AM

Greetz,

I'm curious. Above you describe as "BSR 5EG FX": Where are you seeing or getting "FX"? Serial No.?

Tim Bishop 11-07-2009 11:53 AM

Mac? PC?

I don't think the issue I'm seeing has anything to do with a "local" (yours or my) computer. I think it is more tied to the "Host" or the Server in which the Forum resides. Maybe Mike can take a look at it and determine. Again, for the sake of posterity, I'm talking about the Thumbnails in post no. 376.

Yes, 376 is fine. I click on them and they blow up in a small window with a black background. I click That and it opens in a new page. I click THAT and it gets even bigger?

So, Where is the Problem? Not here that I can see!

Thumbs in post 376 open just fine for me. Try it on a different computer Tim.

Tim Bishop 11-07-2009 02:12 PM

Hmmm, interesting. I have tried it on another computer; same results. This is not making any sense. Have you had Mike look at it?

Serial is 5EGxxxxxxxFX, meaning (according to Ken) Figured/quilted 5A eXhibition grade maple top.

Greetz,
Dirk

Yep, was just trying to understand where you were getting the "FX".

Tim Bishop 11-07-2009 07:14 PM

I just thought of something. When you click that Thumb, it pops up into a small window that you click to open and expand. perhaps it has something to do with your computer settings or Pop-up blocker control. Maybe?

Tim Bishop 11-07-2009 08:36 PM

I don't think so.....

No, it's not that. I don't think it has anything to do with the end-user's local computer. The image is stored on the host. There are plenty other thumbnail images stored on the host and I have not problem opening those. Let's see what Mike thinks.

Can any of you give me some info about my Ken Smith bass I purchased . I have no idea what model or type of woods used or why they were used at that particular time. The necks I usually see are 3 or 4 piece as this one seems to be a one piece construction. I am not complaining, but would like to know what it is that I have, and it's price range as far as KS basses go, and if it is on the upper end or lower end of KS basses. Thanks for any info !

Model?

Well, your serial number would reveal more information about the bass. The neck is a 3 pc. maple with a Pau Ferro fretboard. Never saw a Smith 4 pc. or 1 pc. neck. Based on the pics (a side view would be helpful), looks like a 3 pc. body: Maple top and back with a walnut core. This model is one of the BT models: Which one, I'm not sure. Again, the serial number would be helpful. Look at the end of the fretboard or inside back cover for serial number.

Nice bass!

Thanks Tim

I found the original place of purchase, well not THEE original place, (Ken Smith's Shop), Ha! But where my seller got the bass from. Does the description seem correct?
Very Clean Ken Smith BSR MS 5 string with Flame maple top and back and Walnut core. 3 pc Maple neck-through with Smith HSC.

Not BSR

BT 5 MS model with upgraded 3 piece wings of flame/tiger maple top and back and walnut core.

This has the BT shape body wings. The BSR is the other shape we make with a longer bass side horn and slightly narrower wings overall.

ED LOZANO 11-08-2009 07:10 PM

I knew it!

Thanks so much Ken for taking time to give me an accurate description of my bass. I never have understood what all the letters meant, but something just didn't seem right. I am so pleased with my bass and the pride I feel when I play it ! I also wondered if you remembered building this particular bass, but I know you build oh so many. Thanks again for all interest.

This is my BSR M5 and P.A.P.A. from Bangkok Thailand.

Help me!!!

Hello friends,
First let me say that I am very happy to join this forum made up of enthusiasts of Ken Smith basses, even more so to hear that Ken Smith himself participates in it.
By the way, to speak directly with the owner of a company that makes a world famous bass is really very rare.
My desire for a Ken Smith bass began in 2003, when I saw a show of Luis Miguel called LIVE (on DVD). I was amazed by the beauty and tone of that bass.
My first difficulty was to find out what the brand of bass. That time I had never heard of Ken Smith, neither the people I asked to. Three years later, after showing this DVD to several musicians, I found one that told me it was a Ken Smith.
The second difficulty was to find a Ken Smith to buy. I tried at the biggests stores of musical instruments and at MERCADOLIVRE (the brazilian ebay) and not found.
My dream only could be carried in December 2008, when I met Geisan Varne (he is on the Ken Smith list). He brought from USA to me this BSR-6GN (photos below).
Here you can see the “before and after”, because he had some marks of slap and I restored it here in Brazil.

Yes JASON MENDELSON, I think that you were the previous owner of this bass. I realized this because i saw the same bad sheet in your photos.

Well, I would like to take this opportunity to ask some questions.
As I said above, which awakened in me the desire to buy a Ken Smith was the show of Luis Miguel. I thought that tone just wonderful.
Here you can see one of the songs from the show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB6K_HOIHps
However, I have tried all possible settings and I havent achieved anything like that sound. I was using a Peavey TNT 115 bass combo amp.
I spoke to Geisan Varne about it and he said that to get that tone I needed a valved amp and recommended me to buy a DAVID EDEN. And I believed it because I am fan of Spyro Gyra and I saw on their site that Scott Ambush uses a DAVID EDEN.
So I bought a David Eden WT 550 and I use it with a cabinet 1x15 (like a HARTKE).
However, I havent got the tone that I seek, and sincerely, I still prefer the sound of my old Peavey TNT 115.
Then I had an idea of searching on the web for somehow to met Gerardo Lalo Carrillo (another vip of Ken Smith list), bass player of Luis Miguel, to get more information about his rig. So, I found his page on Facebook and I left there my question. He answered a few days later but did not clarify nothing. His answer was basically this: "El sonido que usted busca esta en tus dedos y en tu corazon" (The tone that you are serching for is in your fingers and in your heart).
Unsatisfied with this answer I left another message asking if in that show (LIVE) he was using some effects module. He said no, that connects his bass directly to mixer (console).
The fact is that I've tried everything, but I havent got the tone that I am searching for.
Seeing this forum now occurred to me the idea that some of these specialists in Ken Smith basses might have the answer I need.
So I need the cooperation of you to help me to find the sound of my dreams.
Thanks everyone.
