I hope all of my fellow "Smith" Bass players out here have done what I have in respect to obtaining insurance on your axes and rigs. Personally I have to much $$ invested in my gear not to. What are your thoughts on this issue? :confused:

My insurance policy is this; in this order:

1. My insurance company has me covered.
2. I live in a gated community and have a home that is fully Alarmed (w/motion detectors) and monitored.
3. I have 2 German Sheperds and a BC/Arctic/Eastern Timber Wolf on constant patrol in and outside my home.
4. Where coverages 1, 2, and 3 fail, I am always home and legally armed.

Don't get me wrong, I see it as just stuff, but barring the unexpected I feel fairly well protected. :D

Albert, how do you have your basses insured? Homeowners, or an extension policy?

I have my basses and rig insured through Clarion they specialize in insuring instruments, I got the inside scoop on them a Bass Day at the Millennium Hotel last year in NY. They are also being advertised on Bass player.com
The premiums are very reasonable.

Hey, guys! In anticipation of receiving my Smith, I went ahead and spoke to my friendly State Farm Agent. We've been with her for years (Homeowners, Auto, some life, a Personal Articles policy or two).

I told Teresa what I was receiving, and the value of it. She instructed me to bring the Smith in for a photo session, along with the receipt. She'll insure it under a separate "Personal Articles" policy for a nominal annual premium. If ANYTHING happens to it (theft, fire, etc.) it's then replaced at FULL value, no deductable!

Like a good neighbor...well, you know the rest! :rolleyes:

Ronson that's great but do some shopping around before signing on the dotted line, for instance will they give you a loaner if you have to send your axe back to Ken for a set-up? if the item is anywhere else other than your home is it covered? Clarion Instrument Insurance does all of this and a lot more, so research before you decide on going with your good neighbor. It might save you from being axe-less in the time of need.

Al, you've given me some good points to check! I KNOW our State Farm girl doesn't have any Smiths laying around for loaners (good point!), but I know that if the axe is ANYWHERE on this planet, it is covered for theft, fire, water damage, mysterious disappearance (her wording).

At any rate, Clarion Instrument Insurance sounds well worth checking out.

Hello to you all!
Maybe it's off topic, but has anyone tried a Smith J-series bass? What were your impressions?
I haven't played or touched or seen (except for pix on the web) a Ken Smith so far but I would like to order one. I was thinking of a J or J-MW. Do you by chance know any websites where I could listen to a J sample? Unfortunately walking in to a musical instrument store and try one is not an option for me :-(

I've owned a j mw for a year now and it's the best of both worlds.I almost had smith soapbars installed when i bought it but a guitar player(who also plays bass)gave me some insight.With just a slight tweak from the eq,i can go from the authentic" Smith" sound to early fender jazz,so i am very happy i didn't touch it

I am happy to hear that. I know that authentic Smith sound, but I've never tried what it feels like. I am much more familiar with J type basses. So does it also produce that bright HiFi voice as well? What wood is your J-MW made of? Originally I was planning to choose an ash only body, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe walnut-maple...

Hi fi,deep growl,Jaco-esque mids.Does it all.Mine is a flamed maple body with walnut top/headstock.Very light weight

It's an EG (Elite 'G'). They're all neck thru.

beautiful bass man.. That's an awesome grain pattern in that ebony top. I often wonder how heavy those things are.
