Nice piece of history there! It does look amazing for being 24 years old!

Bill Bernhard 02-09-2009 03:54 PM

I just came across these pics today. This was my first Smith, 1985 Set Neck, Passive Electronics. I bought it new and owned it for 20 years, had to let it go to get my 5 String Smith.

85 Ken Smith BT 5 G & 1995 Ken Smith BMT 4 Cocobolo

Take a look at my super rare ken smith collection. The 85 is the first shedua bass ken ever did and there are less than a handful of BMTs that were made in a 4 string. This one is a super rare cocobolo top and back with mahogany core. The sweetest sounding four you will ever play.

Mike

Bob Faulkner 03-31-2009 11:55 AM

Let's just agree they're equally sweet then!

Michael Wilson 04-01-2009 01:15 PM

I love this bass, I wanted one ever since i saw my teacher's BT6EG.
It plays great, and sounds great.
There's just a little problem with the electronics, it's playable but i get this hum when i play passive (so i don't :p) but all this should be sorted out when i buy a new electronics retrofit from Ken Smith.

(sorry for the greasy fingers! i took these pictures after playing for a while)

Bob Faulkner 04-03-2009 11:38 AM

That's a nice old beast you have there!

And nope, never seen a Smith with a dunlop bridge.

Hey i love this bass, i am a 3 knob junkie. Good luck with the repairs, but i would send it to Ken and let him do the repairs. Cant go wrong that way.

Mike

Mattijs De Graeve 04-07-2009 01:13 PM

thx Michael,

I would love to just send my bass to Ken so that he could check everything out.
But as i said i'm young and from belgium so the cost for the shipment and the inssurance alone would be to costly for me. I worked in weekends and hollidays just to pay for the bass. And i'm pretty broke now so with UPS it would be to costly.

Someday :p,

thx,

Mattijs

Bass

I totally understand. Good luck with the bass, i know its going to sound outstanding.

BMT 4 Morado ?

Coming soon into my arsenal: a New Old Stock (!!) BMT 4 Elite:

http://www.mrbassman.net/images/Smit...m-frontjpg.jpg

http://www.mrbassman.net/images/Smit...o/btm-back.jpg

the serial number is BMT4R... Does that mean Morado top ?

The back looks like Zebrawood, is that true ?

Tim Bishop 04-24-2009 07:35 PM

Morado?

The top looks like Morado. Not certain about the back though; possibly Morado. Doesn't look like a Zebra wood back to me. Fretboard also looks like Morado (Pau Ferro).

Ken?

Bob Faulkner 04-27-2009 10:56 AM

stunning grain on that bass though!

Michael Wilson 04-28-2009 12:10 AM

bmt4

Would love to see the headstock. Very nice wood grain.

Definitely purpleheart.

That would be the first Smith I've ever seen with purpleheart in it. I thought Ken had discontinued the use of purpleheart, but maybe he had enough laying around to do this piece?

Ken Smith 05-17-2009 01:26 AM

lol..

Yes, I don't offer PH but I do have a small bit of it in the shop that is left over from many years ago. I was asked by my Dist. in Japan/Asia to use it for a 'price' as it is extra work to use it as body laminates.

The Working Definition of "Pron"

Pron - a derivative of the word "pronography," used exclusively to describe the finished product, pictures and/or other images of the fine artistry produced by one Ken Smith of Philadelphia.

Ex.: My living room has been overtaken with bass amplifiers, cabinets and my husband's shameless indulgence of pron!!!! :D

Tim Bishop 05-20-2009 12:22 PM

Uh Oh....
