This is a beautiful French Bass, Paris/Bernardel School c.1900-1920 (attributed to the shop of Léon Bernardel (1853–1931)). Unlike the Mirecourt school where just about every violin cornered bass has the Purfling going around both the upper top and back as well as the back false Cello button, this violin cornered bass is clean and simple. The quality is in the simplicity of the beautiful craftsmanship. Originally made as a 3-string bass, possibly for the English market. The original varnish is of the best quality I have seen on a French bass.

Being converted from 3-string bass originally, I have no history of the conversion to 4-string or when that was done. The current Rubner 'French-style' gears fit, look and work well with the bass.

Measurements:
String Length; 41 1/4"
Top/Back Length; 44 3/4" top, 45 1/2" Back to the button
Upper Bout; 20 3/4"
Middle Bout; 15"
Lower Bout; 26 1/4"
Ribs (not including plates); 7 3/4" (Upper Bout tapers to 6" at the Neck)

(SOLD)
