The bass barbeque

Hello all double bassists.

I'm having the First Annual Bass Barbecue for Double bassists, their spouse, partner, best friend or significant other.

Place: 129 Thomas Drive
Sycamore, Illinois
60178

It'll be held Sunday afternoon from 1:00-6:00 at my daughter's house. She has a large back yard and a covered area in case it rains.
We'll barbecue some pork, you bring a side and what you want to drink. I'll even have some Boca Burgers on hand if you don't eat meat, or bring something else if you like.

Bring your bass to show and play (not a requirement), and if you want me to look at it to evaluate it's condition etc, I'll be happy to do that.

We're getting together just to have some fun and hope you can come.
Please RSVP: martin@martinsheridan.com so that we'll know how many to prepare for.

best,
martin

Annual Bass Barbecue??

Is this where you burn and barbecue all the basses that are not worth fixing?

Martin Sheridan 07-23-2009 11:13 AM

Yes

Actually, I've thought about doing a cardboard cutout and burn it in the backyard pit ala The Burning Man.

But no, no basses will be scracrificed to the bass gods.

Hmmm, well, he didn't specify DB from EB, so, sounds like the "secret sauce" is out. To answer your question: No, I wasn't talking about DB's.

Ken Smith 07-23-2009 04:33 PM

Hello all double bassists.
You gotta read PAST the headlines.. lol

Tim Bishop 07-23-2009 04:37 PM

So much for posterity....

"Read PAST the headlines"? Before, it said "bassists". He edited his headline at 2:27 PM and changed the opening. NOW it reads "double bassists".

Ken Smith 07-23-2009 05:20 PM

double

Yes, I did edit it to say "double" bassists and not bassists. Now, if you are a double bass wannabe and want to find out more about the double bass and meet some real live double bass players who can answer your questions, please feel free to come, but please email me so that I have a count.

thanks

Thanks for the invite Martin. Unfortunately I can't make it on that day.

If I could just get a lefty electric, I could join in. I gots lots of rightys, but I don't want to restring. Plus, the closer will be Richard having obligations that prevent his attendance. Probably a good thing though, he is a bit of a firebug. :)

This Sunday

The Bass Barbecue is this Sunday. IF you haven't RSVPd yet, please do.
Looks like we'll have a nice group.
best,

Ken Smith 09-19-2009 02:12 PM

so???

This was a month ago?

What happened?

Nothing to report?

How was it?

How was the food?

Who showed up we might know?

Martin Sheridan 09-21-2009 01:48 PM

yum yum

We had a small but well attended Bass Barbecue. My son in law cooked up some pork shoulder; actually loins I think. Very good. It was a lot of fun and we'll do it again next year, possibly earlier in the summer. It turned out that some of the bassist who wanted to come had to move into their dorms that day in other cities.
Peter Tambroni and Virginia Dixon came. They are both well known teachers in our area, and Virginia does clinics in Colorado and even Japan as well as the Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists. She's the author of the book on Suzuki bass. Peter brought some quartets but we spent too much time yaking and didn't get around to playing them.
However we were well fed and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Next week I'll begin working on a copy of J B Vuillaume. I'm letting go of the notion of a cornerless for the time being.

Ken Smith 09-21-2009 02:06 PM

a what?

Working on? Fixing a copy bass or making one? Also, what is the actual Bass it was copied from? I have played Basses by 2 or maybe 3 of the makers that made basses for JB so I am curious to see what someone is calling a JB Vuillaume. To my knowledge, JB himself didn't make the basses.

Richard Prowse 09-23-2009 11:00 PM

Just a thought, what did you use for fuel at the bass barbeque? I hope it wasn't a Smith Burner! :D:D:D
