"Special Effects" w/Jerry Brooks

I was invited last night to Penns Landing (Philly Pa., by the water) for an outdoor sponsored 'Smooth Jazz' concert. Playing there was "Special Effects" w/Jerry Brooks on Bass. Jerry has a 1990 Smith BT6G in a trans Red finish. One of about 3 or 4 reds (4, 5 and 6) we did back then.

Jerry was actually a Bass student of mine when he was a teenager back around the early 80s or so. It was nice hearing him as a mature adult. He had a nice rich deep sound in the mix and cutting highs. In soloing, he was patient and well composed using just about the entire range of the Bass but maturely.

It was the first time I heard him live, ever! Was a real treat.

Yes, Jerry Brooks is the man! What a smooth, funky, sophistocated player...

Check him out here in the Omar Hikim band...

Also, check out his work on D'Angelo's first record...

Thanks for pointing this guy out. He's incredible. Here's a clip he did for Hartke where you can really here how awesome his tone his. He talks about clarity and you can really here it in his playing (especially starting at 2:30) Nice depth in his tone too.
