Wittner Composite Tailpieces?
I am playing a Lam bass. I have been told that the Wittner Ultra Composite tailpiece is way better for a lam bass that a traditional ebony tail piece. They are claming that it gives much better Volume and tone. Anyone have feelings about this?

I have a Wittner on my New Standard (came from Arnold and Wil like that), and put one on my other bass (Christopher flatback).
For pizz, I think there is a small volume boost, arco can get a bit wilder (less dampening by the tailpiece?). On my Christopher bass, the Wittner helped a wolf-note I had on the Bb on the D string, but arco playing became even harder. |
+1 I went from having a whittner to an ebony tailpiece, and was much happier with the sound. It also felt a lot better to bow, like the string was fighting me. It all comes down to what you're playing.

You might want to try the Marvin Cable Tailpiece.
I tried one on my Bass and it gave it a much more open sound, evened out the response, and made a few wolfs much less of a problem It was so successful that we also installed one on my sons bass. It made even more of a difference on his. For the $80.00 or so cost it may well be worth your trying it. Don |
Hi-- Im new here-- been lurking a while. Anybody got any ideas about whether the composites give a bigger boost to lams vs carveds. I've been interested in them for a while. Thanks

Hi Hugh, I think you may expect to hear a small volume increase. However your mileage may vary, etc. The good thing is that Bob Gollihur sells them for only $50! My New Standard ply came with a Wittner, but I prefer it with a nrmal ebony tailpiece - arco is easier and there's less boom.
