What's in your CD player/iPod?
 

I really have enjoyed the 'What are you listening to?' thread over on the TBDB site. This this new KSB bass forum is the bomb, I though it'd be cool to have a similar thread over here where it's not frowned upon for people who play double bass to also list music with no double bass or music with bass guitar or synth generated low end.

Right now I am listening to the '99 D'Angelo album Voodoo with Pino Palladino on electric bass. I also just listened to Coltrane's Blue Train Paul Chambers on bass and I got Radiohead guitarist and composer Jonny Greenwood's Bodysong: Music for the film. In general, I like it.

Time Warner Cable was supposed to come over today and set up Roadrunner high speed internet, but they didn't show up. I am looking forward to be able to check out more audio and video online when they make it here.

Right now I'm listening to some Tower of Power...a great funk group that if anybody hasn't checked out they should.

I also listen to a lot of Chicago and Earth Wind and Fire. This is usually my weekend music after having rehearsals and class all week.

I really like TOP and EWF; I would like to get more of their essetial albums. Which TOP albums do you like, Nick?
Today I've been listening to a really cool album, Andrew Hill's Black Fire with Joe Henderson, Richard Davis and Roy Haynes.

Soul Vaccination: Live in Concert is a great album. Also, Soul with a Capital "S", Souled Out, and Back to the Streets. Those are some of my favorites.

They have so many great CDs that you really can't lose with any of them.

We're playing Mahler 2 here right now, so it's San Francisco Symphony with Michael Tilson Thomas playing Mahler 2. What a piece.

I put in Brad Mehldau Trio, Day is Done with Larry Grenadier on double bass.
Also, on the radio I heard some incredible singing on an NPR opera show. I wish I could remember the name of the female singer.

i'm listening to ari roland's cd sketches from a bassist's album'... he has a song called replaceable me, slightly based on embraceable you... really good gut string playing...

Today, I've been listening to John Patitucci's Line by Line, his latest album. Also, Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac.

Line By Line's been on my Pod a lot lately. I'm really diggin' Adam Rogers on that one.

I really like John's tone A LOT on Line by Line. I do wish Chris Potter got more room on it, but I like this group's sound (JP Trio with but not really featuring Chris Potter). As far as bass sounds go, steel strings pizz have been bugging me lately. I've been listening to PC and Richard Davis a lot and find the gut sound to be more vocal and communicative, like it brings out a better, more real sound of the bass. I think John Patitucci is getting that kind of sound on this albums with the metal wound gut.

Fred Hammond: Somethin' About Love
Fred Hammond is a great Christian/Gospel singer,arranger,songwriter who happens to be one of my favorite bass players. I've listened to his music for a while, but I just found out that he played bass for the Winans in the early 80's. Two highlights for me are an awesome 1/4 funk bass line on 'Not Just What You Say', and a great part on 'Lord We Need Your Love'.

Brian Bromberg

Although his tone is somewhat unconventional, very growly and knarly, I love the energy in both his electric on DB playing.

I think his chops are certainly remarkable yet he remains musical.

Marc Johnson

Another really talented player. Love his fluidity. Great with Bill Evans in the 70's. More recently with John Abercrombie and on his own.

These three have been permanently in my mp3s for two years. Never sick of them

I've been relistening to my old John Martin records lately ... Grace and Danger, Solid Air etc. There's some lovely bass in there too but I don't have a clue who it is.

Nice recent album with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJonette. I love Eddie's sound on this, very dark, and he plays some amazing stuff. Jack is predictably unpredictable, as always.

Fuera - Renaud Garcia-Fons & Jean-Louis Matinier... DB and accordian... two French guys. I was lent this CD by a violinist I'm going to be playing with. It's quite unusual and beautiful... hard to describe.

I just got a Renaud garciz-Fons' Arcoluz. What an incredible player. He has an incredibly bright tone that not everyone will like, but his technique and musicality are incredible.

Increasingly, my 'pod is filling up with songs that I need to learn for performances.... I received some MP3s on Sunday morning for two new tunes from Amy Hanaiali'i.. for an opening act that we did that evening (with EW&F). Since it was a kind of big deal, I was glad to be able to listen to them while going about my business during the morning. Today, I have it loaded with tunes for a Willie Nelson recording that's happening in later this morning. I find the little thing indispensable as a scratchpad for last minute projects like these.
