In '99 it was a 3-pc nk, not 5 and the circuit was the 9v, not the 18. The core is tiger maple. It is the same bass we make today if ordered but we are not doing Bubinga at the moment. In it's place for all usages we offer Shedua instead. Same kind of wood for the most part in a different color. http://www.kensmithbasses.com/woodpa...econtents.html http://www.kensmithbasses.com/woodpages/bubinga.html http://www.kensmithbasses.com/woodpages/shedua.html I hope this helps. Other than the exact day the bass was finished (which is on the back plate inside) or the place it was shipped to, my records will not tell any more than I just did. I can tell more by looking at the bass than looking up the number. It's just a number with basic information. One thing I can see is this bass needs some Smith Strings on it, That would make it closer to original and have the balanced set any neck deserves. ;) |
Woods.....
Based on the pics, the top, back and peg-head-face looks like bubinga to me, Al.
When I ordered my 5GN fretless back in '01, I talked with Ken in length about wood choice for my fretless-to-be. The decision: Bubinga top and back (peg-head-face also), Tiger Maple Core with a thick slab of ebony for the FB. Not only is that a great wood choice; let me just add, my '01 5GN fretless is the best sounding fretless I have EVER heard or played. |
Strings....
Yeah, slap some Smith Medium Taper Cores on that bass, Al. They truly are the best strings for any Smith bass (or any other EB IMO). Keep in mind though, you will need to do a re-set-up, but once you do, I doubt you'll ever look back. ;)
