Greetings from Oregon

My name is Jack Vogel, I am a professional software engineer,
currently working at Intel, but having spent long years at IBM and
Sun Microsystems as well. I do Unix kernel development work.

Trained in music since 5 years old, played trumpet and baritone
in band in high school, piano throughout my life, I have not only
a Schimmel grand piano I love, but also a Roland X8 synth.
Starting playing guitar and EB maybe 15 years ago which led me
to an interest in jazz. Because I never could as a kid, I took up
sax at that time, and did some community jazz playing with that.
But I decided to go back to the strings, and started playing string
bass with an eye to jazz about 5 years ago.

A coworker at Intel got me interested in community symphony
opportunities, I now play in two, and although I still love jazz, there
is nothing else I've found that I love as much as the bow, I only
wish I had 8 hours a day to play it. I have spent the last year
taking lessons from a student of Rabbath's here in town, but I
feel I've hardly scratched the surface yet. Doing a concert tomorrow
afternoon playing Beethoven's 1st Piano Concerto, and when I
get to perform him it just brings tears to my eye, its such an honor.

Nice to be in a virtual community with others who love this
instrument as much as I.

Jack
