Well, the first thing I do is make sure the bass is set-up for me. That means: Action is where I want it, strings are fresh and neck is tuned. Then, I play it unplugged and listen for consistent...

Well....
You can do this with the bass being unplugged. If you can hear the quality in the instrument unplugged, you will be a happier camper when it's plugged in.
