I've had a fair bit of success just sanding the rosewood to final smooth up to 600grit W&D then dye with a spirit dye, seal with danish oil (helps darken it).

no point trying too hard to get black...

I don't get how the top could be made from a harpsichord top - if you mean harpsichord soundboard, then wouldn't it be way too thin to carve a bass top arching...

They are a custom order from Michael Abarientos in the Phillipines. A variation on an existing model with larger handles to look more "french". All brass, though.
