Well, clearly extra caution would be in order in parking garages and the like, but I think things would be perfectly safe in a nice water tight hard shell cargo box. I mean, people put expensive road...

Car-top cargo boxes

Anybody know of a roof top cargo box that is deep enough to fit a bass? The biggest one Yakima makes is 18" - seems like that might barely be enough but I'm not sure if it's an inside or outside...

Well, it's the actual Laborie endpin that requires a hole to be bored in your bottom block. Not that that's really such a big deal, plus, you retain your regular endpin. The KC unit anchors through...

What does your teacher say? Does he use one?

I personally go for the "not broke don't fix" school, but I guess it can't hurt to experiment. Check out the KC Strings tilt block setup - that seems...

Unless you live in a major urban center and know who to go to, I'd say just send your bow to one of the well know shops and have it done. If you call, they'll send you a tube to ship it in.

And...

For sure. Not only does it stretch, like Ken says, but rosin builds up and it just plain gets dirty and worn out.

I say that if you play with the same bow every day, it should be rehaired once a...

I think rehairing technique and hair quality/variety are something (well, among many things) that are really lacking or absent, at least in the US. It may seem like a minor thing, but bow hair, at...

Fair enough. All the more reason to get regular rehairs. Assuming you have a luthier who does a good, consistent job anyway.

I really don't mean to sound like a jerk, but tightening your bow is something that is so simple it really can't be explained. I mean, if it "bottoms out" it's too loose, and if it's too tight, well,...

Looks fake to me - no way a gnarly slab cut top that old is going to be in such good condition, and the scroll definitely doesn't look right.

I'm curious if the machines they're putting on these...

Looks great; interesting to see what the original varnish has done over the years.

I'm curious what you're using as a steam source?

I'm not - it's your discussion thread, on your forum... I want to play by the rules, but if the rules aren't stated...

Not all users may be aware of the specific terms or subjects that are offensive here - one example from the forum would be terms for or references to urine - as was recently an issue I think, even...

If the joint is decent (any joint) I wouldn't worry about the glue not being strong enough. I'd rather re-glue a joint any day than see something broken where the joint could have popped.

Which...

I tend to think jazz DB players and bass guitarists have much more in common than either does with the symphony player, but that's just me. While I dabble in jazz and BG, my education and interest...

Yeah, I think I've seen dyed hair for sale on eBay or something. Whatever float your boat, I guess - I kind of want to find some bling bling anodized bridge adjusters just for fun... :D

Question Pinned blocks

Any thoughts on this? I haven't seen a lot of basses made this way, really, but when I have I kind of scratch my head and think "hmmm, that can't be a big help"...

Bow hair - types, quality, sources

I don't recall this having had a thread of it's own, at least recently. So - what kind of hair do you prefer and why? Where does it come from? - as in, where on Earth, or what kind or beast, and/or...

hair age

Ken -

How often do you get a bow (one that you're using all the time) rehaired? Do you go by how much playing it sees, or by time?

I don't love new hair either, but after a few long sessions...

I think the question of whether bows actually get better with age is an interesting one. I tend to think they don't really get "better" so much as they just, well, change. And, the good bows stick...

I don't think this is really true, but I can see where it seems that way. I bet if you did a survey, you'd find that a lot of the women you think don't like music actually just think the music scene...
