The Smith strings greatly improve the tone...

Low b is now gone

Ken,
I am sorry to hear that the mighty 5er is gone for good.
Did you try playing it when it was strung with a high C?
If so, did you feel the high C was any benefit to the style of music that you...

Morris Arboretum (U of P) and the tale of two cedars

I spoke with Dr. (I can't use his name) at Morris Arboretum about the Cedar early in the day, before I dropped the tree. They have several cedars on campus that look to be about 150' tall.
He told...

RIP American (Atlantic) White Cedar

Well the Cedar is down but not forgotten.
I managed to collect some small seeds before I put most of it in the shredder.
I counted 61 growth rings on the stump.
The tree is no longer...

When I first started using a bow I tried Carlsson rosin with limited success.

Then I switched to Clarity Winter. The Clarity was OK when the humidity was low but didn't work well on humid days.

Maybe someday I...

That is a good looking instrument!
I am happy with mine especially since it has been touched by Ken himself! :D
I will post the dimensions of my bass for comparison.
Also, my bridge is...

The mighty funf

Has anyone ever played a 5 with a high C?
I might restring the mighty funf with a high C in lieu of a low B.
I'll never leave first position again!;)
My slab 5 is currently strung this way and I...

Muted Tailpiece

Stan,
I had a Shen 3/4 Willow that did the same thing. I muted the tailpiece with an old Tshirt. That worked well. On my Bulgarian bass I do the same thing. The rattle in my current tailpiece is due...

Slick Wounds

I use the Slick Wounds on my frettless six (insert name of low end bass here).
The strings make the bass really sing and IMHO are the only string to be used on a frettless.
Previously I used flat...
