In the Morris book of British makes at the end of the chapter on BF Fendt II, he writes, and I 'quote';

"Oh what a tangled web we weave When first we practice to deceive!"

Sir Walter Scott (the author), being an Englishman, spelt the verb form of 'practice' with an 's'.
