I missed this post last month, sorry. The old BTs are good working basses, worldwide. Same work as we do now. Finish was probably a lacquer of sort but hot high gloss and not thick. We made the 2-band from about 1986-1993. In late 1992 we came out with the same circuit in a 4-knob unit but with an added mid-range plug-in as well, the 4/5 BT/BMT unit. In 2004 we came out with the modified version with 18v usage, same power drain but longer lasting. For Smith basses with the older BMT model circuits out there with S/P switches thru the top, we can Mod these 18s to work as a 9v like before as there is no room for the 2nd battery without moving one of the switches which is a big job.
