Laminated neck - characteristics?

Hi team Smith,

I just acquired a 1999 BSR GN 5.

The back of the neck is 5 piece laminated.

The neck does not feel entirely smooth as it was one single piece, you can actually feel the different laminates.

I don't think this is how the bass left the factory.

Is this due to wood being natural material?
Can it get worse?
