Generally speaking, if you are a fingerstyle player, it helps with your speed. Your fingers are limited to "digging in" at the top of the ramp, thus, you are able to reduce finger drag over the strings as you play.

I personally don't subscribe to the "ramp". I think you can accomplish the same technique without it. However, I do see the logic behind the use of it.
