Default pau wood?

http://www.comcast.net/?section=HOME.../03/679756.xml
This article mentions the "Pau Brazil Tree" and talks about protecting it. What is the Pau tree, and are bass bows made from it? Is it in danger?
Thanks,
D

Pau is the Latin/Brazilian name for 'wood'!

The Brazilwood tree grown in the town of Pernambuco as well as other areas produces Pernambuco and Brazilwood. What's the difference? I'm not 100% sure as it seems to be the exact same species. Maybe it has to do with the cut of the Tree like Fillet Mignon and Porterhouse or T-Bone and Sirloin?

This wood has been used for about 200 years now for dye and bows. My Bazin bow thought to be of Pernambuco may actually be Ipe wood which the bark of that tree is used to make medicinal teas like Pau d'Arco. Ipe has also been used for bows for a long time as my Bazin is over 100 years old. Snakewood was actually used before Pernambuco but all makers switched because of availability and workability.

Pernambuco endangered? Probably.
Protected? Only by those using it and respecting it combined.
Available? Scarce as compared to 25, 50 or 100 years ago.

Thanks Ken. That is the info I was looking for.
It seems that it is a valuable wood. I hope it can be used wisely and sustainably.
