Default Laminated neck - characteristics?

Hi team Smith,

I just acquired a 1999 BSR GN 5.

The back of the neck is 5 piece laminated.

The neck does not feel entirely smooth as it was one single piece, you can actually feel the different laminates.

I don't think this is how the bass left the factory.

Is this due to wood being natural material?
Can it get worse?

thanks and all the best
Michel

This is a 19 year old bass with an Oil/varnish finish made with two types of wood in the neck. Dry hard maple from USA and the other exotic darker wood looks like Morado in your pics. Morado is harder than the maple not as dry with more oil content in the wood naturally. These woods were well aged and dried before the bass was made. You are seeing the slight movement of 19 years of exposure. If it were a concern, you can carefully sane the wood even again and polish up to a glass-like finish as originally down and then re-finish the bass with the materials available in your country. For a full re-finish to match everything up again, all the parts must be carefully removed and then re-assembled. No cutting of any wires and only de-soldering the wires ON the pickups. The circuit stays intact!

Hi Ken, thank you for your reply.

I'm not too worried about the body.

For the neck -
It's not really annoying, but you can feel it quite well when playing, so I will probably do the back of the neck only.
