Default difference in layers

I wanted to know a little more about the advantages of additional neck/body layers. On the Elite models we get a 5 piece neck and 5 layer body with the option to upgrade to 7 piece. What are the benefits of going with a 7 piece neck over a 5? Is it really that much more stable to be worth it or is it really more cosmetic?

What are the advantages of the 7 piece body wings over the 5? Does it add any significant tonal character to the bass or is it again mainly cosmetic?

I have to say I love the look of the 7 piece basses.
