How Does Your Smith Track?

Hi, this is my first post
I wanted to hear from some of you who have used your Smith on recordings, how did you think the bass worked in the mix? what was the Wood recipe? and do you have sound samples! I would love to hear them....

Ill try and get some up of mine as soon as I use it which should be in the next few days I hope.....

It comes through the mix really well actually. There is so much flexibility in the EQ on the bass that it's hard to really answer though.. Anything I say can be enhanced or defeated by EQ settings..

Anyway, I play a BSR4EG fretless, woods are quilted maple top/back, walnut laminates, koa core.




As for sound samples, go to my band's myspace page and listen to our demo songs. The best one to hear the Smith in is There And Back Again.

great guys thank you for the links, seems like the smith fits in very nicely, the preamp is taking me a little getting used to I set the EQ pretty much flat with little tweaks, which is the way I like it....

That's exactly what I have been doing when recording! My BT4 always cuts through, clearly audible but pleasant at the same time. Of course it depends on the musical-style and overall-sound of the recording. Vintage / R&B= neck-pu with a bit of treble rolled in; Fusion / contemoprary-sounds: more bridge-pu with a bit of bass highlighted. It's always astonishing, how many beautiful over-tones and lively 'colours' end up on tape with the BT 4!

The following link is a 30 second commercial clip where I played and recorded the bass track using PreSonus FireBox as Audio Interface and Sonar as the recording software: No effects on the bass; everything flat. I'm using a Smith Cocobolo 5EG: Smith Medium Taper Core Strings, Volume 100%, Pan centered, all Tone Controls flat (i.e. centered).

I should have given my EQ settings used in those recordings..

Mids set flat, Highs slightly boosted (1 o'clock) Bass slightly boosted (2 o'clock), pickups set slightly favoring bridge pickup (11 o'clock), Bridge pickup in series, Neck in parallel.

I've found that really brings out the fretless mwah while keeping it from being annoying. When I slap I boost the highs all the way up.. Though there is no recorded evidence of this..

sounds even better through my old Avalon U5 DI's into my old Apogee AD8000 audio interface... wish I never sold em, but not doin as much home recording any more... so no need...
