Default Tailpiece hole vs. String ball

Here's one that pops into my head on occasion -

Why is it that DB tailpieces have a slot plus a hole for each string, when it seems like every string end-ball I come across is too big to go through the holes?

Anybody get tired of it and routinely bore out the holes a little bigger?

Am I the only one who's even noticed this?
