'to be deep' means to have hidden meanings, for example,
telling me about 'big noise...' may be a subtle way of saying that I write (talk) too much on this thread. Obviously the fact that I had to explain this to you negates the original premise somewhat.

I promote you to Field Marshal because of your good spelling of German place names.

And back on topic:

I had a very friendly post this week from Paul, owner of Talkbass, asking me how permanent Basstalk was going to be because he was concerned about "smearing" (his quotes) our business interests.

Our exchange was very civil and amicable but the following points occurred to me:

1) We bought the .co.uk domain name legitimately, in the UK through a UK registration site with a UK credit card. If he wanted to legally bully us, would he have to do so using UK law?

2) How much money must he make from all the subscriptions and advertising that goes on his site? It must be close to half a million dollars or more - any thoughts people? I noticed he's just introduced non-subscription only ads displayed on the first post in every page too.

3) Would anyone who isn't literate enough to tell the difference between talkbass.com (blue) and basstalk.co.uk (brown) be making much of a contribution to either forum? Some how I think not.

4) The membership of Bassworld/Basstalk.co.uk is tiny (4000 members) compared to the leviathan of Talkbass (51,000 members) but it might be worth something to him, if he's concerned enough about its impact on his business interests enough to enquire. I did suggest we could work something out about the domain name when Bassworld is back up but no response.

5) Nobody on Basstalk.co.uk confuses us with Talkbass.com!

We were given 28 days by the owner of Bassworld to delete the database that had been copied from Bassworld for the purposes of testing the test site basstalk. We were in some doubt as to the legality of his request but at the end of the day we thought 'screw it, there's an opportunity for a clean break and some autonomy here, lets go for it'.

So Bassworld had already gone down and it doesn't look like it will be resurrected, Basstalk will be dissolved and so we set up www.basschat.co.uk under some trepidation.

I mean, people have been kicked out of one forum, been routed to another and then asked to sign up to a third - how inconvenient is that? There was one particularly subversive member who had been trying to undermine our management of bassworld by promoting a competitive (but less popular) site and I'm pleased to say that it looks like he's given up and gone to sulk on the other site. Thats cool with us because it means we don't have to put up with his constant harping and it makes the other site even more a refuge for whingers.

RESULT!

So we set up the new site and had 500 people sign up in the first 10 days! Plus it was wonderful the amount of support we got from everyone - such overwhelming positivity. We opened up a donations fund to pay for a new skin for the site and in 7 days managed to raise £150!

I mean, clouds... ...silver linings or what? I'm totally buzzed by the fact that all but one of the nasty people have gone and we've been left with all the good people. It couldn't be better!!!

Onwards and upwards!
