Thanks Bob, i have not seen too many of Kens basses with that type of fretboard, but you really need to hear this bass, unreal tone. I took it to the Guitar Center here in NY to get it fitted for a gig bag. One of the sales cats asked me to plug it in and the whole store stopped what they were doing to find out where that sound was coming from. The store manager wanted to buy the bass, but i looked at him like he was a MAD MAN. Its a 91 BT6.

I have played and own many Smith basses, but for some reason, this bass sounds a little tighter and crisper than my other Smith basses, but you are right Bob, all my Smith basses sound great.

Very nice! Man someone played the holy squeeze outta that thing! That's a lot of wear for just 5 years old..

yeah he did...

but also, the bass does not have the laquer finish on it, so it is going to wear more...

My BMT has seen probably more play, but with the laquer finish, it protects my nails from digging into the wood in the same places... on my BMT you can see dents in the laquer but no damage to the wood...

but the finish on that bass is nice and fast on the neck!

here is one of mine. nothing fancy but she plays herself. and she dont mind hanging next to a fender! when ya see it in person, the grain show through. but in the pic its just a wash. but i do love the smith basses. ill probably get a new one after christmas. something like Bob's. i like that one.

If it's mine you're referring to you can't order a new one like it.. Ken doesn't stock Koa anymore, and the core wood in mine is Koa.. But you can get one close at least :D

ed hauser
09-19-2008, 12:38 PM
then ill get one thats close. i love the smooth look of your bass. i find though that no matter which smith bass you play, new or used they feel so broken in already. right off the shelf and it feels like you've been playing it for years!

Hi there,

Allready half a year being busy to get myself a knock-out Smith bass..
Being these are not cheap instruments my basic motivation was to try some different basses of the same brand next to eachother and choose-out wich to buy. Prior to all of this I kept this forum in check ofcourse:) and also I began to collect all kinds of youtube clips and sound recordings of smith basses, so that I knew what was what I liked and what a real good smith bass sounded like. I had allready played on one Smith that was for sale in the Netherlands, actually this is the exact bass you see in the previous post, Peter's bass. I was amazed how easy it was to navigate on that 6-string bass, never played 6 strings before so this was a fantastic experience.

Anyways I made a desicion to go to a place in the US where they had piles of Smith's in store.
This place being Bass Central Fern Park near Orlando.
I tried about 7 instruments in total among a second hand BSR6EG a new BSR5TN and some BSR*MW's, and just because I was curious an Elrick. These guys where nice enough to unpack a few instruments as they have most of their stock stuff in in boxes:rolleyes:... I mean thats service!.Tho all instruments where pretty good, they did vary alot more in quality then I had enticipated. After a few hours of switching back and forth only a second-hand BRS5MW and the 5TN where left over, and purely cos the 5MW was less than half the costs and had the most monstrous low-B I ever heard plus being incredible even, I took the less impressive looks of the 5MW for granted and bought that thing right there and then WHOOHOO!:D Now being home again I couldnt be more happier, cos now I know I got a really really good Smith, and together with my Glockenklang rig it is something else I tell you!:p

For those who sometimes take a look into the "For sale" threads: I've got this beauty from G.M. - another forum user - and restored it to the original fretless neck at Bassline here in Germany. After years and years of looking for such a rare animal here in Europe I am totally happy to own this. It is pure fun to play. Thanks to G.M. again ...

Up to now I had some concerns whether my favourite fretted bass model (another BMT 5) would perform as a fretless as well. Issue closed: It is a fantastic fretless :) even with the dense woods in the neck, which supports more attack instead of mwah imho...

Here is some photos of my 1985 Ken Smith BT 5 G. It is one of the first 200 basses that were made in New York and it was the first bass Ken did in a Shedua top and back. It has a flamed maple core and matching headstock. This bass has the killer 4 knob KS electronics and looks and sounds like the 5 string version of John Patitucci's 1985 6 sting bass. I believe that this is the bass that was photographed on the cover of Ken's 1986 Catalog (unsure, but the woodgrain says...Match). It is 100% original, in near mint condition, and sounds better than it looks!

I am the second owner and it has all the original documentation, original strap, original case, and everything else. For it's age, it is in incredible condition.

Take a look at my super rare ken smith collection. The 85 is the first shedua bass ken ever did and there are less than a handful of BMTs that were made in a 4 string. This one is a super rare cocobolo top and back with mahogany core. The sweetest sounding four you will ever play.

I love this bass, I wanted one ever since i saw my teacher's BT6EG.
It plays great, and sounds great.
There's just a little problem with the electronics, it's playable but i get this hum when i play passive (so i don't :p) but all this should be sorted out when i buy a new electronics retrofit from Ken Smith.

(sorry for the greasy fingers! i took these pictures after playing for a while)

thx Michael,

I would love to just send my bass to Ken so that he could check everything out.
But as i said i'm young and from belgium so the cost for the shipment and the inssurance alone would be to costly for me. I worked in weekends and hollidays just to pay for the bass. And i'm pretty broke now so with UPS it would be to costly.

Someday :p,

thx,

Yes, I don't offer PH but I do have a small bit of it in the shop that is left over from many years ago. I was asked by my Dist. in Japan/Asia to use it for a 'price' as it is extra work to use it as body laminates.

Maybe we should call it a 5A Flamed Quilted Maple :).

Well, we do come across pieces that look spiral at an ankle and we call that Quilted Flame but this one looks more like what we call 'Cigar Quilt' where the wide figure looks like Cigar paper unraveling. Truly a stunning piece of wood.

Cigar Quilt Tobacco-less smokin' Bass. The healthiest way.. lol

Hi Tim! You are quick! :)

It has a maple body with pau ferro (morado) fingerboard.I'm curious. I took notice of your settings on the bass. Looks like you're favoring the bridge p/u, and you have bass, mids, and treble boosted considerably. Not that there's anything wrong with this, just curious of these settings. What amplification and speaker cabs do you play through?

It is 8 ohm! Why?:rolleyes:Just wanting to see how much of the amps power you are utilizing. At 8 ohms, you're getting around 180W from the 260. The WTX-260 can handle a 4-ohm load with an output somewhere in the 300W+ range. Since you only have an 8-ohm cabinet, this is good, because you could add one more 8-ohm cabinet (connected parallel) and get the most from that amp and additional coverage if needed. You may not need it, however, if you ever do, you can. You would be impressed! ;)

Andre Urquiza
10-26-2009, 09:09 PM
That's true Tim. I got the 8 ohm because i only play small gigs and use the amp mostly for praticing, so i don't need much power. And , as you said, i can always add another cab.

Based on the pics (a side view would be helpful), looks like a 3 pc. body: Maple top and back with a walnut core. This model is one of the BT models: Which one, I'm not sure. Again, the serial number would be helpful. Look at the end of the fretboard or inside back cover for serial number.

Hello friends,
First let me say that I am very happy to join this forum made up of enthusiasts of Ken Smith basses, even more so to hear that Ken Smith himself participates in it.
By the way, to speak directly with the owner of a company that makes a world famous bassfile:///C:/Users/Notebook/AppData/Local/Temp/msohtmlclip1/01/clip_image001.gif is really very rare.
My desire for a Ken Smith bass began in 2003, when I saw a show of Luis Miguel called LIVE (on DVD). I was amazed by the beauty and tone of that bass.
My first difficulty was to find out what the brand of bass. That time I had never heard of Ken Smith, neither the people I asked to. Three years later, after showing this DVD to several musicians, I found one that told me it was a Ken Smith.
The second difficulty was to find a Ken Smith to buy. I tried at the biggests stores of musical instruments and at MERCADOLIVRE (the brazilian ebay) and not found.
My dream only could be carried in December 2008, when I met Geisan Varne (he is on the Ken Smith list). He brought from USA to me this BSR-6GN (photos below).
Here you can see the “before and after”, because he had some marks of slap and I restored it here in Brazil.

Yes JASON MENDELSON, I think that you were the previous owner of this bass. I realized this because i saw the same bad sheet in your photos.

Well, I would like to take this opportunity to ask some questions.
As I said above, which awakened in me the desire to buy a Ken Smith was the show of Luis Miguel. I thought that tone just wonderful.
Here you can see one of the songs from the show.

However, I have tried all possible settings and I havent achieved anything like that sound. I was using a Peavey TNT 115 bass combo amp.
I spoke to Geisan Varne about it and he said that to get that tone I needed a valved amp and recommended me to buy a DAVID EDEN. And I believed it because I am fan of Spyro Gyra and I saw on their site that Scott Ambush uses a DAVID EDEN.
So I bought a David Eden WT 550 and I use it with a cabinet 1x15 (like a HARTKE).
However, I havent got the tone that I seek, and sincerely, I still prefer the sound of my old Peavey TNT 115.
Then I had an idea of searching on the web for somehow to met Gerardo Lalo Carrillo (another vip of Ken Smith list), bass player of Luis Miguel, to get more information about his rig. So, I found his page on Facebook and I left there my question. He answered a few days later but did not clarify nothing. His answer was basically this: "El sonido que usted busca esta en tus dedos y en tu corazon" (The tone that you are serching for is in your fingers and in your heart).
Unsatisfied with this answer I left another message asking if in that show (LIVE) he was using some effects module. He said no, that connects his bass directly to mixer (console).
The fact is that I've tried everything, but I havent got the tone that I am searching for.
Seeing this forum now occurred to me the idea that some of these specialists in Ken Smith basses might have the answer I need.
So I need the cooperation of you to help me to find the sound of my dreams.
Thanks everyone.

The Eden WT-550 is one of Eden's best, if not the best, bass heads ever made; period. So, if your are looking for a bass head that can handle the job, congratulations, you've got it. Now it's up to you to learn how to use it; whether its the DI out and/or with the appropriate cabinets and speaker configurations. ;)

Unsatisfied with this answer...."Unsatisfied with this answer"?.... Sorry to hear you are "unsatisfied" with this answer. There's much truth in this answer and spoken with experience to back it up. You should keep this in mind as you develop your ear, playing style and experience. :)

....Not surprised at this answer.

In the end, what you are hearing is both an experienced bass player and sound engineer: It's a great mix for sure, however, it takes both individuals and experience to make it happen. ;)

Looks like that re-finished Bass has the wrong strings as well. Also, what finish is it if re-done? The finish has a sound too! If not my finish, it will not have all of my sound.

I hate to say it, but the answer you got is not far off from the truth. While the bass definitely has a major role in the tone, the same bass sounds very different based on who is playing it. My bass sounds totally different to me when someone else plays it.

Tone is a product of the bass, the amp/effects, and the bassist. The clip you provided did seem to have a tube compressed sound to me, but a tone similar to that is definitely alive somewhere in that bass you have. I can get pretty close to that with my fretless Smith, and he's playing with frets, so it's living somewhere in those EQ knobs. I also play through a Peavey Firebass 700 amp which is solid state just like your TNT, and the tone is in there.

It' a 92 BT6 :)

I bought this bass to a guy who change the preamp to a 4 knob glockenlang preamp...

I decided to buy and install the real and the only one Ken Smith 3 knob one and a luthier behind my place worked on it.

He had to make a little peace of wood and add on the hole.

Tell me what do you think...

Hi to everybody. This is my first time posting here. I started playing bass when I was 12 years old, and when I turned 15 I heard the first Ken Smith bass and I was amazed at the sound it produced! Since that age I've been obsessed with a Ken Smith, I will say it's the bass of my dreams!!! I started playing at church, so by the age of 17 I played with a Christian band down in Mexico so the director of the band bought a Ken Smith bass for me. I was so excited but I didn't enjoy it for the simple fact that it wasn't mine. Lets fast forward that 12 years later and now I own my Ken Smith that I have always wanted, here are the spec.

Model: BSR6GN
Walnut Top & Back/Tiger Maple Core, 5pc Neck through/Macasar Ebony Fingerboard w/Mother of Pearl Top & Side dots, series/parallel switch.

Like I said I haven't not picked up a bass in 12 years so today I received my brand new Ken Smith bass and I practiced for about an hour, my fingers are hurting. The muscle memory is still there but not the agility. I'm very happy with my Ken Smith I finally have my dream bass and it sounds amazing.

I stopped playing bass because I joined the military so I didn't have time to practice and I just left it. But now that I'm settled in I plan on playing again, and even better why not start playing with your dream bass. Ken what do you do to your basses that sound amazing!!! I'm a VERY VERY VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER!!! I'm new here so I don't know how to post pictures of my bass, so here are the links to my facebook.

Thanks Tim I still have to settle in my mind that I own a Ken Smith, just received it today so I'm still a little shocked! Ken I will say that I have played a lot of basses, example (Michael Tobias, Modulus, Pedulla ect) and they sound good, but they tend to imitate the sound of a Ken Smith. I can't stop saying how happy of a customer I am!!! Now my next goal is to get a nice amp.

moderator please feel free to direct me to the correct forum. Tim, for the past 12 years I've been a fan of SWR and DAVID EDEN. I have played with many basses and different type of transducer amps. When I was playing that Ken Smith at the Christian band I played with a 4X10 Hartke cabinet and a 200w head. I was not impressed and that's is probably why I didn't not enjoyed the Ken Smith. On the other hand I've played a Ken Smith thru an SWR and a DAVID EDEN and OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH my GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD it sounds amaing. Completely different sound!!!!

Best regardsBubinga? No.

Birdseye Redwood is a very rare wood and Ken only made a few basses with it. In fact, I had never seen this wood used until Ken introduced it with his 20th. Anniversary Models. The KSA6 I had posted is 1 of 3 made. I believe the origin of this wood was California.

I'm not aware of an "Exhibition" or 5A grade of Bubinga. While Bubinga can have a nice figure (some nicer than others), it is a heavier but also great sounding tone-wood.

Hey Ed,
Thanks! I also think it came out pretty nice but it's pure luck, I wasn't thinking about it. On the other hand, you really need to make a big mistake for a bass like this to look bad ;)

I have a CR5G (89897 S) that I purchased from Huber/Breese in '98. I remember buying this and having a MTD bass shipped on inspection at the same time. Though the body style for the MTD was more similar to what I was used to with my Charvel, the tones of the Smith won out hands down. I'm having trouble uploading the image, so I'll do that later.

I am curious as to what the woods are in it, and what style is most similar to today's models?

....I am curious as to what the woods are in it....Based on above pic: Looks like the core body wood is black walnut with maple laminates. The center block is maple. The top wood I am guessing is Shedua or a species of walnut? With the serial number you provided, Ken would be your best resourse in identifying the woods with certainty.

Tim Bishop

....and what style is most similar to today's models?
....The bass you show in the pic would be similar to the "BT" body-style of today.

Ken Smith

The 'S' in the end is for Shedua so that is the Top. I can't see what the side laminations look like in that pic but if 5pc, the thin light wood would be Maple laminate or veneer as we used then. The Core looks dark but so does the picture. I would guess that the core is Mahogany, African species.

The '97' in the end is the year made. There should be a completion date on the label inside the back plate.

We made several body wing sets back then used on Bolt-on's and Neck thrus in 4, 5 and 6 string model basses. The theme was basically 'The African model' using all african woods for the Top, back, core and most of the feature woods bordering the wings and center, mainly in contrasting colors using Bubinga, Shedua and Zebrawood. That's what comes to mind. I have bought a small load of African Mahogany to try out as an alternative to the traditional tropical mahogany. The load yielded about 40-50 core sets so I just made these up with African Top woods and dubbed it 'African model' body wings.

I finally got my dream bass, the old mighty BMT6. I had the privilege to play it today at my church and I was blown away. Amazing instrument, truly a work of art and craftsmanship.

This is the Hybrid between the BMT and BSR but basically a BMT with the BT point instead of the scoop which is sort of how the BSR was born. Beautiful Bass.

Hi all,

I have actually had some dummass say to me; "hey dude, nice Carvin" at which time I told him that he was mistaken. I informed him that the bass was really a "Sears", couldn't he plainly see the big "S"?

Gotta love a wiseass!!

Wow, a MD7 and BSR6EG. Now,, that's a totally heaven pair of Smith's. What year are they respectively?

Rory Lane

Hey Roy

The Cocobolo/Walnut MD7 is a 2001, 9 volt pre-amp and Ebony/Tiger Maple is 2011, 18 volt pre-amp that I just received. Two very different instruments for tone, there is nothing similar in the way that they sound.
The Ebony to my ear is really brilliant across the tonal spectrum with lots of punch. The Cocobolo is very smooth and deep on the low end with crystal like highs, mids are very complex which I roll off quite a bit. The Maple/Mahogany that I just sold had a very classic Smith sound that was warm and punchy with strong mids that Smiths are known for and sat well within the mix when playing live.
I am probably giving you more information than you need but I really enjoy these instruments and thought this might be info that you are others could use if looking at something similar in a Smith bass.

Hi Rory! I was watching your Smiths, they are really beautiful basses, but seeing the setup of your series/parallel switches I noticed you use the neck pickup in series (switch up) and the bridge pickup in parallel (switch down), and see that configuration in both of your basses; so my question is, why you like this setup? I ask because I have had this doubt for some time and also because I have noticed that other Smith players use that configuration too.

Thanks for sharing! :)

Very nice Roy!

I recently traded my 5EG for this KSA-5 20th Anniversary in Flamed Redwood. I'm very pleased with it! It's not to heavy, balance is perfect. It has some playwear but it sounds and plays like a dream (what did you expect?... it's a Smith :-)

Hey Hector, sorry to take so long to respond I just noticed the post. As you know tone is very subjective and what sounds good to me may sound like crap to the next guy. I like a big warm tone with a lot of bass on the bottom end. While I like plenty of highs I like them in the background and mids to be present but not to overwhelming. The selection of the Series/Parallel switch in this position seems to help me achieve these tones.
Keep in mind both my basses sound very different from each other but the setting still works for me. For this conversation I would say that my Melvin Davis 7 string bass sounds similar to what you might hear from Nathan East and my Ebony 6 would be similar to what you might hear from Stanley Clarke. Of course these comparisons are just my evaluation but I think this is close.
I have been dealing with carpal tunnel in both hands and some other nerve damage so I have not been playing much just teaching. If anyone else is dealing with or has dealt with carpal tunnel please chime in on remedies or exercises that have helped you. Hector, I hope this information helps but as I stated in the beginning tone is very subjective.

Did you have a special reason to choose Redwood for these anniversary basses, Ken? I don't think this wood is very common and was not used much beside this model...

I had it this very old Redwood that I had recently purchased just laying around with no special place to use it. I also had a bunch of old tiger maple cut up for core sets, about 45-50 sets worth just stacked in the shelf so I glued them up together for this model and it was very well received.

Just received my BSR EG with a 7 piece neck. Superb sustain, great balance and the known Smith sound. I used it tonight at the rehearsals and I can't afford myself anymore to make any mistake, because you hear every tone you're playing (haha). I played it in combination with my Mike Pope MPP-1 pre-amp and the Bergantino IP112ER.
