Well, from what I read from the serial number, it is a Smith 6-String Bass - "M" Series; Made in 1999; Has the 9V pre-amp; Tiger Maple Body. Ken may have to correct or provided additional information from his records.

In 1999 when your bass was made the circuit was the 9v unit. The specs page only shows the current model specs.

1- The build structure is different.

2- The 18v model takes 2 batteries and they drain together as one.

3- The frequency settings for the boost/cut points have 4 positions INSIDE the bass that can be 'carefully' adjusted by taking the plate off. It can be broken from misuse or careless handling as well. The 9v settings are within this switch system as well. The pre-set when we install or sell the unit is set differently from the 9v 'fixed' settings.

Am I missing something here? Are you talking about the DIP Switches? If so, there are 6 positions.

Tim Bishop 01-04-2010 08:19 PM

Btw....

BTW - Is anything available from the manufacturer that would detail the frequency ranges for the 6 individual DIP switches?

Tim Bishop 01-04-2010 08:28 PM

Ahh...

Ahh, I think I see what you are saying. You must be talking about the 4 setting options within the Bass, Mid, and Treble ranges that are adjusted via the 6 DIP switches. Correct?

Here it is....

Dip Switches

What year did the internal Dip switches become an option on KS bases? And how do they change the sound options?

Tim Bishop 01-05-2010 07:16 PM

When....

I believe it was 2004 when Ken came out with the 18V pre-amp and DIP Switch opton.

Ken Smith 01-05-2010 07:16 PM

2004

The new 18v unit came out in 2004 on the 25th anniversary models and within that year became standard on all models. As far as sound changes, it depends on how you set it and how you eq. it. If you play with the bass flat, then it's the same. If you set it to the old 9v settings, then it's the same as well.

Tim Bishop 01-05-2010 07:19 PM

How?

How? By changing the DIP Switch positions for Bass, Mid, and Treble. You'll have to experiment with these settings and let your ear make the final decision on preferred settings.
