fake?
Just came across this thread. Antiquing a bass is not the same as trying to pass it off as old. Did the seller say it was old? Was the seller himself knowledgeable? Too me it looks like the bass...

Sorry, but that's a German bass; a nice one though. It might be worth the money anyway.
On second look the body might be French, but the scroll is definitely German.

touch up
This is a job for your bass luthier. I'd touch up the small places and French Polish over the large worn area to protect it from further erosion.

Gotz (with an umlaut over the O, pronounced in English Gertz). That family has been in the business for generations. I met the elder Gotz about 15 years ago and he told me they purchased all of their...

I now have everything I need to make the bass except the ebony fingerboard which shouldn't be a problem. I've decided against making the cornerless. I love the look but have decided that they are too...

We should also add to the list Roger Millant's biography of J B Vuillaume.

Arnold,
I couldn't agree with you more about your comments on making and varnishing. When I first started I thought that the making part was the hardest, now I think it's the varnishing.
It's...

There is a built in conflict of interest when firms charge a percentage of the value they write.
And thank you Ken for the additions to the auction house terms. I was working from my very...

I heard another last week that I hadn't heard in sometime. The player said he owned a Frankenstein....the back and sides Italian, the top something else, the neck and scroll from something else.

Ken,
I agree completely.
I don't think there is a bass expert. Too many basses were made without labels, labels can be falsified or copied, taken out of one bass and put into another etc. Then...

It's shameful that Ebay doesn't police itself better. I've seen more fraud on Ebay. Last year a very well respected American maker tried to get them to take off a listing for a cello with his name...

A cheap fix is to lossen the top from the neck block and along the ribs all the way down to just past the top corner blocks. Pull the bass neck forward and try to get about 150mm height projected to...

I have seen a few flat back basses with only one brace in the back for the soundpost and they seem to have held up very well.
Also, I think the X Brace is supposed to help the cracking problem, but...

Ask your shop bass expert to show you. That's the best way to learn and any reputable dealer will be happy to do so. On carved basses the grain will show through at the edges of both top and back....

Thanks Don. I've had a couple of good leads. Canada isn't out of the question and the woods from there are very good. However the shipping costs are frighteningly high. I'll check out his site.

The newest Howard Core catalog has the picture from another angle.
Klotz was such a big name and there were so many of them that they were also 'copied' in the 19th and 20th century; mass...
